Shields named MW Coach of the Year

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --- Fresno State men's tennis head coach Luke Shields was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year, announced by the conference on Friday afternoon. Coach of the Year is voted on by the eight MW head coaches.
"This is an honor," said Shields. "This is a reflection of the hard work that every single player on our team has put in throughout the season. Every award that this program receives, individual or not, is a reflection of this program and where this program is going. I cannot put into words how hard this team has worked this season. I have an amazing staff behind me and an amazing team with me."
Shields is the first Fresno State men's tennis coach to be named MW Coach of the Year in program history.
Shields is in his second season at the helm of Fresno State men's tennis program.
The Fresno State men's tennis program has made huge strides forward under Shields' leadership.
This season, the Bulldogs finished the season with an 18-13 (5-2 MW) record. Fresno State took second place in MW regular season play, its highest MW finish in program history. Fresno State's 18 overall victories were the most in a single season since the 2012 season.
Last season, the Bulldogs finished in eighth place after posting a 10-17 (0-6).Â
Fresno State entered the 2017 Mountain West Men's Tennis Championship as the No. 2 seed. The Bulldogs fell in the semifinals 4-3 to No. 3 UNLV, after defeating Air Force 4-0 in the quarterfinals.
Four Bulldogs received All-MW accolades in April, five total awards were taken home by Fresno State. Xander Veys and Euan McIntosh were named to the All-MW Singles Team playing at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. The Bulldogs' No. 1 doubles team, Euan McIntosh and Patrik Pech, were named to the All-MW Doubles Team.
Zdenek Derkas was named MW Freshman of the Year, Fresno State's first MW Freshman of the Year since joining the conference.
Luke Shields was named the eighth head coach in the history of the Fresno State men's tennis program. Shields spent the previous two seasons as an associate head coach at his alma mater, Boise State, where he was a three-time collegiate All-American.
