Fresno State finishes championship with three All-Americans, matching the most in program history at a single championship.
EUGENE, Ore. – The final day of the collegiate track and field season saw Fresno State's Kayla Hopkins and Annemarie Schwanz each earn second team All-America accolades at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Both Bulldogs finished 11th in their events on Saturday afternoon.
Â
In the first of Fresno State's two events, the 1500 meters, Annemarie Schwanz became the first distance runner in program history to become a two-time All-American. Forced to move to the outside midway through the race to hold position, Schwanz was unable to remain with the lead pack late in the race as the group pulled away and stretched across three lanes. The Bulldog senior finished the race 11th overall with a time of 4:17.10. She entered the event as one of four athletes in the field to return to the final after running in it at the 2016 championships.
Â
Shortly after Schwanz finished, it was Hopkins turn in flight two of the discus. On her second attempt, the junior landed a mark of 54.51m/178'-10" to move into seventh. Throwing second in the flight though, Hopkins was passed four times before stepping for her final throw. She was unable to get a clean attempt off and would finish 11th in her first appearance at the NCAA Championships.
Â
Along with Vanja Spaic's 11th-place finish in the javelin on Thursday, the three All-Americans matched the 1987 team for the most All-Americans at a single championship in program history.
