Bulldog junior will compete at the championships for the first time in her career.
FRESNO, Calif. – On Friday, for the first time in her athletics career, Fresno State's Yazmin Torres will compete in Mexico at the 2017 Mexican athletics national championships in Monterrey. The Bulldog junior will compete in the discus which is scheduled to begin at 7:05 a.m. CT.
Â
"Last year, I was not aware of the competition early enough and missed the deadline so this will be my first time going and I am very excited about it," Torres said about the championships. "I have a high chance to win so I'm going in there not expecting to win because anything can happen, there might be a big thrower out there, but you have to know how to answer it and that's what I am prepared to do if needed."
Â
Holding dual citizenship in the United States and Mexico, Torres will represent the state of Guerrero which only has three athletes in the meet. She feels blessed to be a dual citizen as competing in Mexico is something that she's always wanted to do.
Â
Training for Torres has in most aspects not deviated from what she has done all year, even though her outdoor season has been extended longer than ever before. The goal has always been for her to be peaking at this point in the year with the collegiate season having concluded last weekend. Weather is expected to be similar to what she faced last month in Austin, Texas at the NCAA West Preliminary Round so it won't be unlike anything she has not seen.
Â
The biggest change in training has been her practice times. Due to the early start time, and Monterrey being two hours ahead of Fresno, sessions have started just after sunrise to better prep her mind and body for competing much earlier than the majority of her competitions. While typically asleep at the start of Friday's event, training her body to be awake and focused has been a must.
Â
"The only thing going through my head right now is excitement," Torres said. "I feel like there is going to be some nerves since there are those in every competition but there will be more excitement for this meet since I'm going to be competing back in my country."
Â
Aside from wanting to win the event, Torres' biggest goal is breaking the Mexican national record which stands at 176'-0"/53.66m and is held by Irais Estrada Lopez after she set it at the national meet on May 22, 2010 in San José del Cabo. Torres landed her top mark of the year in late April at the Bulldog Invitational, a throw that measured 167'-0"/50.91m. Surpassing 50 meters in competition was a significant moment for her this season after previously landing it in practice. She now feels that she can reach the national record.
Â
"I did get off to a rough start this year, not exactly where I wanted to, but once I hit 50 meters, and hitting it repeatedly, I knew what it felt like and how I needed to be in the ring, what mentality I needed to have," she said.
