Two-time All-American earns first Academic All-America nod from CoSIDA.
FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State's Annemarie Schwanz was selected to the 2017 CoSIDA Academic Division I Track & Field/Cross Country All-America First Team on Friday. The fifth-year senior holds eight school records between the cross country and track and field while also working on her master's degree in civil engineering.
On June 10, she became the first two-time All-American distance runner in program history after earning after second-team honors in the 1,500 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. In 2016, she placed seventh at the championships in the event.
Â
Schwanz became a three-time Mountain West champion this year after adding the 2017 indoor mile and outdoor 1,500 meters gold medals to her list of career accomplishments. With this spring's win in the 1,500 meters at the MW Championships, she became only the second athlete in conference history to win back-to-back championships in the event with the first occurring from 2002-03. The native of Neuruppin, Germany added four all-conference honors to her career total which currently sits at seven. In all, she broke or reset five of her eight schools records during the 2016-17 season.
Â
Off of the track, Schwanz is a three-time Mountain West Scholar Athlete and Academic Team honoree while also being a three-time USTFCCCA All-Academic selection, two from track and field and once for cross country. This is her first inclusion on the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team after being a two-time selection on the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team. Schwanz is one of 14 student-athletes named to the Academic All-America First Team. She is one of five selections on the first team to currently boast a 4.0 GPA.
