Fresno State assistant to guide USA women’s combined events team at the Capital Cup in Canada next week.
FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State assistant coach Martin Palavicini will spend next week in Ottawa, Canada serving as the women's head coach for Team USA at the 2017 Capital Cup Combined Events Championship to be held July 3-4. The event is a fixture on the IAAF World Combined Events Challenge Series and brings together the best heptathletes and decathletes in the western hemisphere.
"To have the opportunity to assist our athletes and staff in international meets is a great honor," Palavicini said. "It is a humbling experience albeit a valuable one for any coach. You get to see the highest level of our sport first-hand, from warm-ups to the podium and everything in between. It is also a great opportunity to network with athletes and coaches from around the world."
This summer's Capital Cup will be Palavicini's second stint as a coach for Team USA and his fourth overall at the international level after previously working with Nigeria and the Dominican Republic at past championships.
In his first season with the Bulldogs, Palavicini helped Jestena Mattson earn a gold medal in the pentathlon at the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championship in February before taking bronze in the heptathlon at the MW Outdoor Championships in May. The sophomore broke the school record in the pentathlon with a score of 3,828 points. At the outdoor championships, her total of 5,333 points put her in third place all-time in Fresno State's history, while her day one total of 3,282 points set a new program high.
