Diamond 'Dog Carter Bins named Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Freshman All-American

After earning Mountain West Co-Freshman of the Year honors on May 25, Fresno State Baseball's Carter Bins added another accolade to his standout freshman campaign as he was named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper on Wednesday morning.
TUSCON, Ariz. - After earning Mountain West Co-Freshman of the Year honors on May 25, Fresno State Baseball's Carter Bins added another accolade to his standout freshman campaign as he was named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper on Wednesday morning.
Bins becomes the 13th 'Dog to be honored by the publication since 1990 and it is the 12th year that Fresno State has had a representative on the team as he joins the likes of Jeff Weaver and Aaron Judge in becoming a Freshman All-American.
"What a fantastic and well-deserved honor for a great young player," said head coach Mike Batesole. "Carter certainly has a bright future ahead of him."
The catcher from Fairfield, Calif., continued on Fresno State's tradition of strong backstop play as the rookie made 54 starts behind the plate appearing in 58 of the 'Dogs 60 games. Bins hit .291 from the dish with 52 hits, including 16 for extra-bases as he totaled nine doubles, a triple and smacked six home runs. He added 28 RBIs, 38 runs scored, a .392 on-base percentage and a .453 slugging percentage on the season.
Bins tallied 11 multi-run contests scoring a season-high four runs on April 23 in a 27-5 win at Nevada where he went 2-for-4 and added an RBI and was hit by two pitches. He added 12 multi-hit affairs going for a season-high three on three separate occasions over a four-game stretch in the middle of March.
Bins became the 11th Freshman of the Year honored by a conference in program history as he appeared in all 30 Mountain West conference games on the season making 29 starts behind the plate at catcher, Bins hit .266 from the dish finishing with 25 hits, including seven for extra-bases as he notched three doubles, one triple and three home runs, scored 20 runs, drove in 14 RBIs and recorded six multi-hit games.Â
Finishing with a .389 on-base percentage and a .415 slugging percentage in Mountain West conference games, Bins went 3-for-4 with double, home run, three RBIs and scored two runs in a 10-8 win at Air Force on March 18.
Starting 54 of the 'Dogs 60 games behind the plate, Bins put together a stellar .988 fielding percentage only making five errors on the season.
