Sophomore earns Fresno State’s first All-American accolades in the javelin since 2007.
FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State's Vanja Spaic became the first Bulldog since Mallory Webb in 2007 to earn All-America honors in the javelin as she finished 11th overall to claim second-team accolades on Thursday evening at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field.
Â
Spaic progressively increased her mark on each of her three throws through the first flight. With a mark of 49.02m/160'-10" on her second attempt, shot up the leaderboard with her third throw of the flight. The sophomore's final throw landed at 51.55m/169'-1", the fourth-best mark in program history.
Â
She would eventually be passed up by other competitors, slipping to sixth with one flight still remaining. The sophomore would eventually fall into 11th overall, pushing her out of finals. In the overall standings, Spaic's third attempt earned her the All-America honor as her third throw was a difference of nine spots. Along with the NCAA accomplishment, the native of Trebinje, Bosnia hit the qualifying mark she need to compete for her country at the European Athletics U23 Championships this summer.
Â
Earlier in the day, Annemarie Schwanz continued to put her stamp on the Fresno State program, qualifying for the finals of the 1500m for the second straight year. In the faster of the two heats, and with a swirling wind that forced runners to endure a head-wind during the race, the senior finished third with a conference-record time of 4:10.93. It was the fourth-fastest time recorded in the NCAA this season.
Â
The 1500m final will be contested on Saturday at 3:41 p.m. PT, and will air live on ESPN. Day two of the women's events will also feature junior Kayla Hopkins in discus at 3:05 p.m. The junior enters the competition as the No. 2 seed after finishing second at the NCAA West Preliminary Round. The discus will be streamed live on ESPN3.
