MIAMI - Former Fresno State Bulldog Aaron Judge powered his way to the 2017 Major League Baseball Home Run Derby crown on Monday evening at Marlins Park.
"Everyone put on a show tonight and it was an awesome atmosphere," said a joyous Judge afterwards. "These fans were awesome all night and I can't thank them enough for everything."
The former Diamond 'Dog hammered 47 home runs over three rounds on his way to claiming the championship. With the help of his pitcher, Danilo Valiente, the New York Yankees' batting practice pitcher and coaching assistant, Judge blasted 23 home runs in the first round to edge the hometown Marlins' Justin Bour who sent out 22 long balls in his home ballpark.
Moving onto the semifinals, the Linden, Calif., native needed 13 home runs to edge Los Angeles Dodgers rookie Cody Bellinger to advance to the finals where he faced Minnesota Twins Miguel Sanó. The rookie right fielder needed only 11 home runs to pick up the championship as he became the first player to win the College Home Run Derby (2012) and the MLB Home Run Derby.
Judge currently leads the MLB in home runs (30), on-base percentage (.448) & slugging percentage (.691) and sits atop the American League with 61 walks while ranking second in runs (75) and is ninth in hits (99).
