FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State senior offensive lineman Aaron Mitchell has been named to the 2017 Rimington Watch List, as announced by the Rimington Trophy Committee on Tuesday morning.
Given to the top center in collegiate football, Mitchell is one of 70 offensive lineman on the initial fall watch list. A native of San Diego, Mitchell brings 24 consecutive starts over the last two seasons into his final season as a Bulldog this fall. As a junior in 2016, Mitchell started all 12 games with his first four starts coming at left guard and his final eight at center as he enters 2017 leading the team with the most consecutive starts (24) and owns the second-most career starts.
He helped lead a rushing attack that gained 1,394 yards on the ground, led by starting running back Dontel James' 697 yards and blocked for a passing game that produced 2,557 yards through the air while the starting line unit limited opponents to 2.58 sacks per game. As a sophomore in 2015, Mitchell started all 12 games for the Bulldogs at left guard where he helped lead a rushing attack that gained 1,642 yards on the ground with 920 coming on the ground from starting running back Marteze Waller.
Mitchell is one of seven Mountain West offensive lineman on the watch list joined by Mason Hampton (Boise State), Jake Bennett (Colorado State), Asotui Eli (Hawaii), Sean Krepsz (Nevada), Blaise Fountain (New Mexico) and Keoni Taylor (San Jose State). At least one player from all 10 FBS conferences was nominated as the MAC led the way with 10 nominees followed by the SEC and Big Ten with eight apiece.
The Rimington Trophy is named after Dave Rimington who was a consensus first-team All-American center at the University of Nebraska in 1981 and 1982 during which time he became the Outland Trophy's only double winner as the nation's finest college interior lineman.
