Pogorevc, Spaic to compete at U23 Euro Championships

Competition begins Thursday morning in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
FRESNO, Calif. – The European Athletics U23 Championships begin tomorrow in Bydgoszcz, Poland and Fresno State will have two athletes competing in the field in rising juniors Maja Pogorevc and Vanja Spaic.
Pogorevc, who is representing Slovenia, is scheduled to run in both the 200 and 400 meters. The first round of the 400m is scheduled to begin at 3:03 a.m. PT on Thursday, while competition in the 200 meters will start at 9:24 a.m. on Friday. Pogorevc enters the 200m with a personal best of 24.12. She recorded a season-best mark of 24.18 at the Mountain West Championships. In the 400m, she was bronze medalist at both the indoor and outdoor conference championships. During the outdoor season, she qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary Round after a posting a time of 53.84 in the finals of the conference meet. She has a lifetime best of 54.76 in the event.
Spaic, the Bosnian record holder in the javelin, will compete on Saturday at 4 a.m. She enjoyed a successful second year at Fresno State, earning gold at the Mountain West Championships before qualifying for the European U23 Championships a month later on her final throw at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships with a then-personal record mark of 51.55m. Continuously besting her national record this season, Spaic did so again recently as she landed a throw of 52.86m in competition leading up to this week's championships.
