FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State football sophomore quarterback Chason Virgil was named to the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List on Tuesday. The award is presented annually by SPORTyler, Inc., in conjunction with the City of Tyler (Texas), the Tyler Convention & Visitors Bureau and Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award is named after the 1977 Heisman Trophy winner who is a member of both the College Football and Pro Football Halls of Fame. The award is given to the nation's outstanding Division I offensive player who is either born in Texas, graduated from a Texas high school, played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college. The player must also exhibit the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell, including integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, community and tenacity.
Virgil, a redshirt sophomore this fall, fits those criteria as he played high school football and graduated from West Mesquite High School in Mesquite, Texas in December 2014.Â
A 10-game starter behind center in 2016 as a redshirt freshman, Virgil threw for 2,021 yards and 13 touchdowns through the air completing 166-of-322 passes as he became the third freshman quarterback in program history to throw for more than 2,000 yards in a single season joining Paul Pinegar (2,929) and Kevin Sweeney (2,359). He was one of nine freshmen in FBS football to throw for more than 2,000 yards in 2016 and ranked seventh in passing yards per game among all FBS freshman with 202.1. He ranked fourth in the Mountain West in passing yards per game (202.1) and sixth in the league in total offense per game (214.3).
His 2016 season highlights included throwing a career-best 303 yards and a career-high three touchdowns against Air Force, set a career-high for completions (27) in a single game at Utah State on Oct. 22, going 27-of-44 (61.3 percent), completed six passes for 50 yards or more, four of which were touchdowns and logged the most offensive plays run in a single game by an individual in the Mountain West with 45 pass attempts and 19 rushing attempts vs. Tulsa on Sept. 24.
Virgil joins four of his Bulldog teammates on preseason award watch lists as senior offensive lineman Aaron Mitchell was named to the Rimington Award Watch List on July 11, senior kicker Kody Kroening was named to the Lou Groza Award Watch List on July 12, junior wide receiver KeeSean Johnson was named to the Biletnikoff Award Preseason Watch List on July 18 and junior linebacker Nela Otukolo was apart of the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Watch List on August 10.
The 'Dogs will hold their third and final scrimmage of the fall on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. as the student-athletes will come out to the field early, 5-6 p.m., for a team meet-and-greet on the same playing surface the 'Dogs play on, prior to suiting up for the action. Fresno State opens up the regular season at Bulldog Stadium against Incarnate Word on Sept. 2 at 7 p.m.
