FRESNO, Calif. --- Fresno State women's soccer head coach, Brian Zwaschka, announced the addition of Fresno State men's soccer alumni Erik Farfan to his staff. He will serve as one of the program's assistant coaches.
"We are pleased to have Erik join us, and it is a nice homecoming for him as a Bulldog Alumni soccer player," Zwaschka said. "He has not only a lot of experience coaching at the college level, but he also brings a distinct passion for the game and positive learning attitude. Erik adds great local flavor as an accomplished and well respected local former player and coach. We know he will contribute in many positive ways this season."
A Valley native, Farfan played his collegiate career at Fresno State from 1994-95. He played professionally for the San Francisco Bay Seals and Sacramento Geckos. During his career he also played semi-pro soccer for the Fresno Fuego.
He served as the Fresno Pacific women's soccer head coach for nine seasons (2006-15). During his tenure the Sunbirds compiled an overall record of 61-71-19 and a conference record of 36-49-12. In his final season at FPU, the team finished 6-8-2 in its third season of NCAA Division II play.
Under Farfan's leadership Ashley Sherr became FPU's all-time leader in goals (33), points (86) and game winning goals (9). Sarah King became the Sunbird's all-time leader in goals against average (1.12) and shutouts (13).
During his nine seasons at the helm of the program FPU notched 15 All-Conference selections, three All-Region selections, two NCCAA All-Americans and one NAIA All-American.
Prior to becoming the head coach, he served the FPU women's soccer assistant coach since its inception in 2001.
Farfan spent eight seasons coaching at Buchanan High School in Fresno, Calif., where he led the Bears to five section titles. The highly regarded Central Valley coach was named Fresno Bee Coach of the Year in 2006 and in 2009. He also gained distinction as the Clovis All-City Coach of the Year (2005, 2006) and Tri-River Athletic Conference Coach of the Year (2005, 2006).
During his career, Farfan has also coached numerous elite club teams in the valley and served as the women's soccer assistant coach at Fresno City College
