COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The 12 Mountain West women's soccer head coaches chose four-time regular season champion San Diego State as the preseason favorite to win the 2017 MW regular season title. Fresno State was picked to finish sixth in the MW, announced by the conference Wednesday morning.
"We respect being voted in the top six by our peers," head coach Brian Zwaschka said. "This is a difficult conference and any of the schools will be pleased to finish in the top half to compete for a post-season championship. We look to the top finishers over the past few years to set the pace and that appears to be the consensus among coaches this season overall, too. Now we look forward to getting into the real competition phase to see where everyone truly stacks up."
Fresno State returns 15 letterwinners and 10 starters, including two-time All-MW second-team selection Myra Delgadillo and 2016 MW Newcomer Team selection Julia Glaser. The Bulldogs bring back their top four scorers from last season in Delgadillo, Glaser, Peyton Cline and Alyssa Nishikawa. The foursome combined for 68 percent (19-28) of the teams' goals last season and 55 percent of the Bulldogs' assists. Fresno State's incoming class includes two Division I transfers and three true freshmen.
In 2016, Fresno State tied for seventh in the MW narrowly missing the conference tournament by two points. The Bulldogs 5-5-1 conference record and seventh place finish was the best finish since the 2013. UNLV won its first regular season championship and clinched the 2016 MW Tournament championship title.
The poll puts San Diego State (110 points – three first place votes), San Jose State (108 points – three first place votes), UNLV (101 points – five first place votes) and Utah State (70 points – one first place vote) at the top of the conference.
Wyoming (70 points), Fresno State (66), Boise State (64) and New Mexico (61) were picked to finish in the middle of the conference. Colorado College (43 points), Air Force (37 points), Colorado State (20 points) and Nevada (15 points) fell into the last four places to round out the preseason rankings.
The Bulldogs will open up conference play at home against Boise State on Friday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. PT, in the Fresno State Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium.
What's next - Fresno State will kick-off its 2017 campaign on Aug. 13 with an exhibition match on the road against Cal Poly at 4 p.m. PT. The Bulldogs will open up their regular season competition on the road at Pacific on Friday, Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. PT, before returning home for their home opener on Sunday, Aug. 20 against Fullerton at 12 p.m. PT in the Fresno State Soccer and Lacrosse Stadium.
