Bulldog sprinters shine in opening meet

Fresno State will take its momentum into next weekend at the UW Indoor Invitational.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Led by its 400-meter group, Fresno State wrapped up competition at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational on Saturday with personal bests being set in the field and on the track.
"It was a great indoor opener for us," head coach Scott Winsor said. "We got a solid start from the throwers in the weight throw from Aisiah [Tuiasosopo], Kayla [Hopkins] and Kylie [Coleman] and again in the shot put. Tieara Norman had a good weekend working on pentathlon events. Cecily [Edwards] ran very well in the 60 meters and Morgan [Lewis] in the 60-meter hurdles. All of our ladies performed well in the 200 and especially the in the 400. Breanna Covington also PR'd in the triple jump to cap the meet. All in all, it was a solid start to the season in a high caliber meet."
Against athletes from the likes of USC and UCLA, the Bulldogs held their own in the sprints, particularly in the 400 meters as they landed three athletes in the top 12. Junior Maja Pogorevc led the team with a fifth -place finish, clocking in at 54.87. Njeri Omawaleh came in at seventh in 55.04 followed by Kimberly Efonye in 12th at 56.42.
Kayla Hopkins opened the day with a new personal record in the shot put. The senior landed a mark of 15.38m/50'-5.5" to pass her previous long.
Fresno State's freshmen sprinters and hurdles put together strong prelim performances to earn spots in the semifinals. Cecily Edwards finished third in the 60-meter prelims with a time of 7.64 while Morgan Lewis dropped a time of 8.56 to run the second-fastest time in the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles.
In the triple jump, sophomore Breanna Covington saved her best for last, landing a personal-best jump of 39'-10.5"/12.15m to place sixth. Tijana Antic finished just over a foot behind her teammate in eighth with mark of 11.76m/38'-7".
