Fresno State falls to San Jose State and UC Davis on Day 1 of Cal Cup

BERKELEY, Calif. – Fresno State water polo got the second weekend of its inaugural season started on Saturday, facing off against San Jose State and UC Davis on the opening day of the Cal Cup. The Bulldogs held a 5-4 lead over SJSU heading into the fourth period in their first game but were unable to close the door on the Spartans. And while the 'Dogs poured in 10 goals against UC Davis, they weren't ultimately able to hang with the Aggies' potent offensive attack.
"Coming into this weekend, our focus was on continued growth from possession to possession, working on gaining valuable experience at a high level of play," head coach Natalie Benson said. "We had many good looks in front of the goal and couldn't convert some open opportunities, but the tough part is getting in position to get those shots off. Part of our evolution as a team will be finishing with more consistency, but I feel like we are progressing with some of our offensive and defensive reads and decision making."
GAME 1 – vs No. 16 San Jose State
Fresno State got off to a good start against San Jose State. Callie Woodruff scored twice in the opening period with both goals being assisted by Jillian Wulf as the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead into the second.
Both teams couldn't get much offense going in the second period as they combined for just two goals. Gabrielle Wiltse accounted for the lone Bulldog score as she blasted one into the cage from the perimeter. Fresno State led 3-2 at the break.
Emily Nicholson scored twice for the 'Dogs in the third as both goals were the result of good work at the 2-meter area. San Jose State also scored two goals in the quarter as the Bulldogs owned a 5-4 advantage going into the final period.
The Spartans tallied two goals in the fourth while holding Fresno State scoreless to escape with a 6-5 win.
GAME 2 – vs No. 11 UC Davis
The Bulldogs' matchup with UC Davis later in the day was full of high-octane offense as the two squads combined for 29 goals.
The Aggies' offense got rolling early in the game as they scored seven goals in the opening period while Fresno State got goals from Maddie Loggins, Callie Woodruff and Claire Schade.
Schade tallied her second goal of the game in the second period but UCD's attack kept its foot on the gas as the Aggies scored four more times to take an 11-4 lead at the half.
The Bulldogs' third period was highlighted by a Callie Woodruff hat trick. Fresno State also got goals from Emily Nicholson and Trystyn Vuori in the quarter. UC Davis tacked on five more goals to take a 16-9 advantage into the fourth.
The deficit was too much for the 'Dogs to overcome as the Aggies went on to win by a final score of 19-10 over Fresno State.
Callie Woodruff finished with five goals to lead the Bulldogs and had seven goals on the day.
