'Dogs finish strong in ITA Northwest Regional Championships

SEATTLE – The Fresno State men's tennis team finished the ITA Northwest Regionals with a trip to the round of 16 in the singles bracket and an appearance in the quarterfinals in the doubles bracket. Mantas Bugailiskis, Cem Erturk, Angus Bradshaw and Cagatay Soke traveled to Seattle to compete for the Bulldogs.

"Mantas has really matured and is showing his growth both mentally and physically this week," said head coach Luke Shields. "He really got into a good rhythm in the tournament. Cem showed some grit in his second round before falling to the No.1 seed in good match. Angus keeps getting better with each match. This is a great tournament to see where we are and what we need to work on. Cem and Mantas have really been solid in doubles and have had great energy."

DAY TWO
The 'Dogs finished the second day of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships with Mantas Bugailiskis advancing to the round of 16's and the doubles team of Bugailiskis and Cem Erturk securing a spot in the quarterfinals.

Singles -- Bugailiskis opened his tournament with a 7-6(3), 6-3 win over S. Hinojosa of Santa Clara. He defeated T. Hann of Portland in the second round in straight sets (7-5, 6-2). Bugailiskis posted a convincing 6-4, 6-4 win over J. Barber of Stanford in the round of 32. Bugailiskis will face Y. Kikuchi of Cal in the round of 16.

Erturk defeated J. Gjerdaker of Sacramento State in three sets (5-7, 6-1, 6-4) in his opening round. Erturk bested R. Seby of Santa Clara (6-4, 6-3), before falling to No. 1 seed Sameer Kumar of Stanford (6-2, 6-3).

Soke knocked out C. Kontaxis of Stanford in the first round in a three-set battle 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. He fell to M. Fortini from Portland State (6-0, 6-1) in the second round.

Bradshaw bested I. Yoshida of Portland State in three sets (3-6, 6-1, 6-4). He had another three-set match in the second round, falling to P. Hjorth of Pacific in the second round (7-5, 1-6, 6-2).

Doubles -- Bugailiskis/Erturk defeated Hawk/Lee from Saint Mary's 8-2 in the first round. In the second round, the duo bested Newell/Oberg 8-2. They defeated Roberts/Soemarnu of Oregon in the round of 16, 8-4. The pair will face Barretto/Caya of Cal in the quarterfinals.

DAY THREE
Fresno State's run in the ITA Northwest regional came to an end on day three.

Singles -- Bugailiskis fell to Y. Kikuchi of Cal in the round of 16 (6-2, 6-2).

Doubles -- Bugailiskis and Erturk were bested in the quarterfinals by Barretto and Caya of Cal 8-6.
