‘Dogs build momentum heading into third round of Nick Watney Invitational

MADERA, Calif. – The Fresno State men's golf team began hosting the fifth annual Nick Watney Invitational, formerly called the Fresno State Classic and the Fresno State Lexus Classic for a combined 49 years, on Monday. The Bulldogs got off to a slow start In round one, but battled back in round two to climb into 8th place by the end of day one, carding an 8-over par 584 (302-282) overall.
Multiple 'Dogs competing as independents shined through the first two rounds as two found themselves in the top 20 by the end of Monday's competition. In his collegiate debut, freshman Tommy Stephenson posted the best score of all the Bulldogs competing with a first round 5-under-par 67 and a second round 3-over-par 75 to end the day at 2-under-par 142. The Carlsbad, Calif., native is currently tied for 12th place.
Redshirt Senior Cody Riecks put up the next highest independent score, carding an even-par 144 to tie for 18th place. The Auburn, Calif., native shot a 1-under-par 71 in the first round and followed that with a 1-over par 73 in the second round.
Sophomore Michael Cliff was the first 'Dog on the board competing for Fresno State, tying for 18th place alongside Riecks at even-par 144. The hometown Fresno, Calif., native shot a 4-over-par 76 in the first round, then surged back in the second round with a 4-under-par 68 to break even.
Fellow Fresno, Calif., native Tyler Gardner followed Cliff on the scorecard, finishing the day tied for 24th place at 1-over-par 145. The freshman shot a 1-over-par 73 in round one, then carded an even-par 72 in the second round.
Senior Alex Lee followed Gardner for the 'Dogs, shooting a 6-over-par 78 in the first round, but bouncing back in the second to score a 4-under-par 6. The Sacramento, Calif., native finished the day at 2-over-par 146 to place tied for 32nd.
Freshman Seldon Doyle made his collegiate debut on Monday, posting a 2-under-par 70 in the first round and a 5-over-par 77 in the second round. The Thousand Oaks, Calif., native totaled a 3-over-par 147 on the day, placing tied for 38th.
Sophomore Lane Pulliam was another independent competitor for the 'Dogs, carding a 6-over-par 150 on the day to place tied for 47th. The Hanford, Calif., native shot a 4-over-par 76 in the first round and followed that with a 2-over-par 72 in the second round.
Sophomore Kevin Huff is currently placed tied for 52nd after carding a 7-over-par 151. The El Dorado Hills, Calif., native fired a 5-over-par 77 in the first round and followed that with a 2-over-par 74 in the second round.
Redshirt freshman Griffin Cooper saw the first official action of his collegiate career on Monday, finishing the day in 65th place after shooting an 11-over-par 155 on day one. The Yerington, Nev., native scored a 6-over-par 78 in the first round and a 5-over-par 77 in the second round.
