PALO ALTO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's tennis team competed in its largest tournament of the fall thus far, the ITA Northwest Regionals, over the weekend. The tournament was held at Taube Family Stadium, Taube South and the West Campus Courts in Palo Alto, Calif., for the 12th straight season by host team Stanford. Throughout the tournament, the 'Dogs managed to pick up seven wins while getting plenty of playing experience against top-notch competition to prepare for the spring season.
In doubles, the freshman tandem of Jennifer Timotin and Ella Husrefovic opened the tournament defeating Eastern Washington's duo of Yasmin Mansouri and Rylee Braeden in a highly contested match that required an extra set 8-7 (5). To round out doubles play on day one, sophomore Alessia Dario and freshman Jane Ellis were paired together, but ultimately fell to Liesl Pieters and Clementine Clement of St. Mary's 8-2.
On day two, Timotin and Husrefovic battled the No. 6 duo from Saint Mary's, Maria Kozyreva and Aubane Ville, down to the wire, but were ultimately defeated in an extra set 8-7 (3). Dario and Ellis also found themselves in a tight battle in the doubles consolation draw, but were defeated by Laura Okazaki and Lourdes Ramalle of Portland in an extra set 8-7 (0).
On day three, one of the Bulldog duos was switched around for the second round of consolation matches as Hummel and Husrefovic teamed up, but dropped to Washington's Natsuho Arakawa and Sedona Gallagher 8-0. Dario and Ellis remained paired together, but were taken down by Sacramento State's Carolina Chernyetsky and Jayden Nielsen 8-3.
In singles, Ella Husrefovic was the back in action as the first Bulldog to compete, but fell to San Jose State's Kristina Baran 6-3, 6-1. Next up for the 'Dogs was freshman A.C. Hummel, who came up short Washington's Katarina Kopcalic 6-4, 6-4. Jennifer Timotin then followed Hummel with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Washington's Abigail Watanabe. Up against the No. 4 singles seed of the tournament in Emily Arbuthnott of Stanford, Jane Ellis was defeated 6-0, 6-3. Alessia Dario then concluded the round of 128 on a high note for the 'Dogs with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Alisa Sabotic of Seattle.
To wrap up day one of competition, Dario and Timotin advanced to the singles round of 64 to square off against two highly seeded foes from Stanford. Dario faced No. 2 singles seed Michaela Gordon first, but was unable to come out on top, losing 6-2, 6-0. Timotin then took on No. 9 singles seed Janice Shin, but was ultimately eliminated 6-2, 6-0.
On day two, the 'Dogs all competed in the consolation singles bracket. Timotin was the first of the day, proving to be evenly matched with Washington's Nika Zupancic in a match that went deep into an extra set, but couldn't clinch the match in a 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (9) loss. Husrefovic next fell to Washington's Kenadi Hance 6-2, 6-3. Dario was the next Bulldog up, dropping a match to Portland State's Lotti Meszarof 6-3, 6-3.
