Top 20 female collegiate shooting guards named to watch list for the “Naismith Starting 5”
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced today that Fresno State senior Candice White is among 20 candidates on the watch list for the 2019 Ann Meyers Drysdale Award. Named after the first player, male or female, named to the All-America Team in four straight college seasons, the annual award in its second year recognizes the top shooting guard in women's NCAA Division I college basketball.
A 2018 All-Mountain West selection, White led the league in scoring at 18.9 points per game last season. Not just a scorer, the senior was the only player in the league during the 2017-18 conference season to rank in the top 15 in points, rebounds, assists, steals, free-throw percentage, 3-point field goal percentage, 3-point field goals made per game, defensive rebounds and minutes. On the year, she led Fresno State in scoring (18.9 ppg), rebounding (6.3 rbg), assists (2.7 apg), steals (1.5) per game, and free-throw percentage (91.9) and made 3-pointers (74).
Last season, White became just the second Bulldog in program history to eclipse 600 points in a season (605) as she became the fifth-fastest player in program history to reach 1,000 career points. She joined the 1,000-point club by scoring 1,094 of her 1,107 points across her sophomore and junior seasons. The shooting guard capped off her season with a program-record 40-point performance against Nevada in the second round of the WBI, breaking the school's near 30-year-old mark.
Throughout the first half of the season, White converted on her first 64 free-throw attempts, which dating back to the 2016-17 season gave her 68 straight which ranks No. 2 all-time in NCAA Division I history, two shy of the all-time mark of 70, and fifth-longest across all division.
The Selection Committee for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award is composed of top women's college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, sports information directors and Hall of Famers. By mid-February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2019 Ann Meyers Drysdale Award will be narrowed to just 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to Ms. Drysdale and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. Fans will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite finalist at www.hoophallawards.com.
The winner of the 2019 Ann Meyers Drysdale Award will be revealed on an ESPN platform during the 2019 Women's Final Four in Tampa, Florida. Additional awards being presented and recognized at the WBCA Convention include the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard Award, the Cheryl Miller Small Forward Award, the Katrina McClain Power Forward Award, and the Lisa Leslie Center Award. Also being awarded is the Wade Trophy, the sport's oldest and most prestigious national player of the year award which is presented annually by the WBCA's community of coaches to the best player in college women's basketball.
Last season, Victoria Vivians of Mississippi State was named the inaugural winner of the Ann Meyers Drysdale Shooting Guard of the Year Award.
