No. 5 Fresno State falls to No. 4 San Jose State in MW Quarterfinals, 2-1

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Fresno State women's soccer team fell to San Jose State 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Championship, Tuesday night. The Bulldogs were led by sophomore Robyn McCarthy who scored her first collegiate goal and senior Nicole Theroux who grabbed nine saves in the match.
Fresno State finishes the 2018 season with an overall record of 6-10-4 (5-3-3 MW).
HOW IT HAPPENED
McCarthy, Tori Nicolo, Olivia Muhrbeck, Racine Babb, Megan Amick, Alyssa Nishikawa, Ele Avery, Melissa Ellis, Danielle Pacheco and Kayla Calmes logged the start for the 'Dogs, with Theroux in the goal.
The Spartans went on the attack, taking the first shot of the match in the second minute. Theroux was there to grab her first save of the night.
Nishikawa took the 'Dogs' first shot in the seventh minute off a corner kick from Muhrbeck, the shot missed wide.
SJSU took two consecutive shots on goal in the 11th and 12th minutes, but Theroux chalked both saves.
The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute, when Kristen Amarikwa got her foot on the ball in a crowded box and found the back of the net.Â
The 'Dogs responded with a goal of their own in the 15th minute. Muhrbeck sent a corner kick into the box, McCarthy fought her way through the crowd to send a shot right passed the goalkeeper. The match was tied 1-1 with 30 minutes left in the first half.Â
SJSU attempted to retake the lead with a shot from the top of the box in the 17th minute, but Theroux made a stellar play by punching the ball up and over the net for the save.
The Spartans would take one last shot in the 38th minute, but the first half would end in a 1-1 tie. SJSU took more shots in the first 45 minutes 9-4. Fresno State logged more corner kicks 4-1. Theroux had an outstanding half, recording six saves for the 'Dogs.
Fresno State came out of halftime firing on offense. The 'Dogs took three consecutive shots on goal. Muhrbeck, Avery and Ellis each had a look at the goal within the first 10 minutes of the second half. The Spartans' goalie was able to grab her first three saves of the match.
SJSU tried to retake the momentum on offense. The Spartans took four shots, with two on goal, within a 17 minute span. This run ended in a go-ahead goal for SJSU in the 70th minute. Jamilecxth Bercerra put the ball passed the goalkeeper who was sliding out to make the save. The Spartans had a 2-1 lead with 20 minutes left in the match.
SJSU's defense upped the intensity, not allowing a Fresno State shot for the remainder of the match. The clock would expire with SJSU leading 2-1, punching its ticket to the MW semifinals.
