'Dogs round out UCSB Classic

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Fresno State men's tennis team sent four players to compete in the UCSB Fall Classic over the weekend. The weekend was highlighted by Zdenek Derkas taking third place in the top flight of the tournament.
Derkas, Angus Bradshaw, Henrique Osorio and Patrik Pech made the trip for Fresno State.
"We had some bright spots this weekend," said head coach Luke Shields. "I was really happy with the competition and the amount of matches we were able to compete against strong competition. It was good to see Angus in competition finally. He performed well for his first tournament and we saw some really big weapons. Zdenek performed well and finished 3rd in top flight against good competition. He really showed some toughness in taking out one of Oregon's best players. We have a lot to work on to keep advancing. Doubles will be a big emphasis as we head into season."
SINGLES
A Flight Singles – Derkas represented Fresno State in the top flight. He defeated Dominic Barretto of Cal in a three set battle 2-6, 6-1, 6-3. In the second round, Derkas defeated Ty Gentry of Oregon in another three set battle 6-2, 1-6, 6-2. Derkas fell in the quarterfinals to Michael Genender of Stanford (6-2, 6-1). He earned his spot in the third place match, where he defeated Antoine Noel (7-6, 6-3) to place in the top three of his flight.
B Flight Singles – Bradshaw and Osorio competed in the same flight.
Osorio defeated Alexis Alvarez of Washington in straight sets 6-1, 6-0. Osorio fell in the second round he fell to Riki Oshima of Oregon 6-1, 6-1.
Bradshaw fell in the first round to Joseph Rotheram of UCSB in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Bradshaw moved to the other side of the bracket. Bradshaw defeated Chethan Swanson of UC Davis in straight sets 7-5, 6-4. He defeated Daly Meinert of Cal Poly 6-2, 6-4. Bradshaw finished in ninth place after defeating Gary Vardanyan of Cal Poly.
C Flight Singles – Pech played in the C Flight for the 'Dogs. He fell to Alex Stater of Cal Poly in the first round. Pech was bested by Adam Torocaik of Washington 6-4, 6-2. Pech notched his first win of the tournament against Andrew Whitehouse of Cal Poly (6-4, 7-5). He bested Cambell Nakayama of Cal Poly to finish in 13th place.
DOUBLES
Flight A – Osorio/Bradshaw fell to Soemarno/Roberts of Oregon in the first round, 8-4. Osorio/Bradshaw were bested by Rotheram/Krustev of UCSB in a tiebreaker 8-7(4). The duo had one more match, falling to Goulak/Landa of UC Davis.
Flight B – Pech/Derkas fell in the first round to Nakayama/Vardanyan of Cal Poly in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (4). The duo moved to the other side of the bracket, where they made it to the consolation final. Pech/Derkas defeated Hawken/Turegano of Washington 8-6, before falling to Perera/Genender of Stanford 8-4.
