DAVIS, Calif. – Fresno State water polo closed out its weekend at the Aggie Shootout on Sunday with an exhibition matchup against Team China and a clash with No. 10 UC Davis. The Bulldogs fell 15-5 to China in their first game, and came up short against the Aggies by a score of 18-9 in their second.
"We showed our youth this weekend, but took away some good lessons for this phase of our season," said head coach Natalie Benson. "Many missed opportunities combined with a collective loss of focus resulted in our losses this weekend. The effort was better today, but we need sustained focus for 32 minutes. I'm optimistic that this weekend was a good learning experience that we can take with us moving into conference play."
GAME 1: vs. Team China
Team China scored the first six goals of the game as they held a 6-0 lead with 6:25 remaining in the first half. Jillian Gross got Fresno State on the board by converting a 5-meter penalty shot with 5:49 left in the second period, but China would take a 7-1 advantage into the break.
Sydney Coachman, Emily Nicholson, Claire Schade and Maddie Loggins all scored for the 'Dogs in the second half but Fresno State couldn't keep pace with the Chinese National Team as they poured in eight more goals to go on to win by a score of 15-5.
Nicholson drew a team-high four exclusions, while Maci Layne tallied a team-high two assists.
GAME 2: vs. No. 10 UC Davis
The Aggies got off to a fast start in the opening period as they scored three times in the first four minutes of action. Gabrielle Wiltse got the offense going for the 'Dogs as she scored an even-strength goal with 2:49 remaining in the first. UCD would add one more goal before the end of the period as the Aggies took a 4-1 lead into the second.
Fresno State and UC Davis combined for nine goals in a high-scoring second period. Emily Nicholson, Maddie Loggins, Maci Layne and Callie Woodruff scored for the Bulldogs while UCD countered with five goals of its own to take a 9-5 advantage at halftime.
The 'Dogs once again showed their ability to score in the third period. Natalie Espinoza led the charge with two goals while Claire Schade scored her first of the game. But the Aggies had an answer as they scored four times and owned a 13-8 lead heading into the fourth.
UC Davis ran away with game in the fourth period as the Aggies outscored Fresno State 5-1 to go on to win by a final of 18-9.
Callie Woodruff drew a team-high four exclusions in the loss.
