Fresno State junior right-handed pitcher Edgar Gonzalez was named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week for the first time in his career on Monday.
COLORADO SPRING, Colo. -Â Fresno State junior right-handed pitcher Edgar Gonzalez was named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week on Monday afternoon, as announced by the conference office.
It is Gonzalez's first career Mountain West Pitcher of the Week honor after the Newark, Calif., native and Preseason All-Mountain West selection notched his first win of the season on Saturday evening in the second game of a doubleheader against the Spartans helping the Diamond 'Dogs complete a four-game series-opening sweep over Michigan State.
Gonzalez tossed seven innings in the 'Dogs 2-1 win limiting MSU to five hits, all singles, one earned run while striking out seven. He came within two outs and two strikeouts of matching his career high in innings pitched (7.2) and strikeouts (9). Only allowing one baserunner past second base through the first six innings, the Spartans cut the 'Dogs 2-0 lead in half in the seventh with a two-out single to right field, but Gonzalez was able to get escape the jam with a groundout and help the 'Dogs seal the win.
Fresno State (4-0) returns to action on Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. traveling to UC Santa Barbara (0-3) for a matinee game before returning home to host Southland Conference opponent Houston Baptist (1-2) for a four-game series starting on Friday at 6:05 p.m. from Bob Bennett Stadium.
