The Diamond 'Dogs suffered their first loss of the season at UC Santa Barbara, 7-2 on Wednesday afternoon. The Bulldogs return home for a four-game series against Houston Baptist starting Friday at 6:05 p.m. at Bob Bennett Stadium.
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - A five-run sixth inning by UC Santa Barbara proved to be too much for the Bulldogs to overcome on Wednesday afternoon as the Diamond 'Dogs suffered their first loss of the season falling 7-2 to the Gauchos at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
Fresno State (4-1) tallied six hits in the game as junior center fielder Zach Ashford was the lone 'Dog to collect multiple hits finishing with a pair of singles. Redshirt freshman third baseman JT Arruda smacked his third home run of the season while junior left fielder McCarthy Tatum hit his second double of the season.
The 'Dogs used seven pitchers in the game as the Bulldogs notched seven strikeouts in the game while allowing six walks.
How It Happened
In a matchup of first-time starting pitchers, the Bulldogs' Nikoh Mitchell and the Gauchos' Luke Andrews were locked in from the start as the 'Dogs freshman southpaw tossed three scoreless innings allowing a double in the first inning as that was the lone hit UCSB was able to get off the young hurler.
With Mitchell's day done after three innings, redshirt sophomore Ryan Sullivan came on to pitch in the fourth and after Carter Bins' threw out his second attempted base stealer of the day, the Gauchos' loaded the bases with one out as first baseman Armani Smith delivered a single to right field to drive in one and a Bulldog error allowed right fielder Michael McAdoo to score giving UCSB a 2-0 lead.
UCSB (1-3) extended its lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the sixth tacking on five runs, only two earned, as the Gauchos took advantage of a Bulldog error in right field and a balk and added a pair of runs on a groundout to second and a wild pitch.
The 'Dogs finally broke through on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh with a leadoff solo home run to right field by Arruda. The Bulldogs added a second run in the eighth on an unearned run as second baseman Jeremiah Burks came around from to score from second on a UCSB throwing error by pitcher Alex Patterson.
Notes
- True freshman first baseman Emilio Nogales made his first career start finishing 0-for-4 on the afternoon.
- Ashford has now recorded a hit in all five games this season and now leads the team with nine hits on the season.
- Burks stole his second base of the season.
- The seven pitchers used in the game was the most since the 'Dogs used eight at Pepperdine on March 7, 2017 in a game that was suspended due to darkness in Malibu and finished 15 days later in Fresno.
