The Diamond 'Dogs suffered a heartbreaking 2-0 loss in 11 innings to Houston Baptist on Friday night at Bob Bennett Stadium. The 'Dogs and Huskies return to action with a doubleheader on Saturday at 2:05 p.m
FRESNO, Calif. - A two-run top of the 11th inning for visiting Houston Baptist broke open a scoreless contest on Friday night as the Bulldogs lost an extra-inning pitchers' duel, 2-0 at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Fresno State (4-2) suffered its second straight loss as the 'Dogs were held to six hits for the second straight game. Leading the charge from the plate for the 'Dogs was junior center fielder Zach Ashford who matched his career-high with three hits, including his third double of the season. Ashford reached base for a season-high four times as the Clovis native also drew his first walk of the season in the ninth inning.
Houston Baptist (3-2) countered with eight hits in the contest, including a pair of doubles, as six different Huskies tallied base knocks.
For a second consecutive Friday night, Bulldog starting pitcher Ryan Jensen shut down the opposition matching his career-high with seven scoreless innings as the sophomore limited HBU to four hits while striking out a career-high nine.
HBU starting pitcher Zach Carter was just as good holding the Bulldogs scoreless for eight innings allowing six hits and striking out eight.
How It Happened
A scoreless game through 10 innings, both sides had opportunities to score throughout the game as Houston Baptist put runners on first and third with one out in the top of the fifth, but a groundout by HBU left fielder Spencer Halloran to JT Arruda at third base forced the Husky out before a strikeout by Jensen ended the threat.
The Bulldogs looked to break up the scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth as redshirt senior first baseman Nick Warren came up to bat with runners on first and third, but a bounce out to third base left two of the 11 baserunners Fresno State had throughout the game stranded on base.
Heading into the bottom of the ninth scoreless with an opportunity for a walk-off victory, the 'Dogs took advantage of a pair of Houston Baptist errors to put runners on first and third with one. With redshirt sophomore Austin White coming on to pinch-run at first base for pinch-hitter Torin Goldstein, White stole his first career base to advance to second.
After an intentional walk to Ashford loaded the bases with two outs, senior shortstop Korby Batesole laced a hard-hit grounder to HBU's Tyler Depreta-Johnson at shortstop who was able to relay it to second base for the force out forcing the game to extra innings.Â
After three scoreless innings thrown by the 'Dogs Jamison Hill kept the Bulldogs in the game, redshirt sophomore Ryan Sullivan came into pitch in the 11th as HBU was able to take advantage with a leadoff walk and a single to put a pair on base for Depreta-Johnson who delivered his first double of the season shooting a ball to left-center to drive in the pair of baserunners.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On starting pitcher Ryan Jensen's performance tonight.....
"Jensen had a dominating fastball tonight, he did not have to throw much else. It was like watching (former Bulldog) Justin Haley pitch back in the day. He was pumping fastballs in there and locating it very well and it had some heavy sink to it and you saw how many balls they hit right in front of the plate. That was an outstanding performance that deserved a win."
On learning something from tonight's tough loss....
"This is Friday night baseball. Those are two front-line pitchers and we are going to have play a National League-style of play this season and that was National League-type of Friday night game and that is what we expected and that is what we got."
Notes
- It was the first extra-inning game of the season for the Bulldogs who were 2-2 in extra innings in 2017.
- The Bulldogs left on 11 baserunners while the Huskies left on 10.
- Austin White stole his first career base in the ninth inning.
- Ashford now has a hit in all six games this season and leads the Mountain West with 12 on the season.
- Carter Bins threw out two would-be HBUÂ base stealers in the game and now has thrown out six on the season while only catching five games.
