Mattson, Norman grab points in pentathlon

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Fresno State women's track and field team sits in fifth place after day one of the Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Championships, scoring eight points in the pentathlon on Thursday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Sophomore Tieara Norman got the Bulldogs off on the right foot, finishing with the top time in the 60-meter hurdles with a new personal record of 8.68, nearly two-tenths of second less than her previous low. Junior Jestena Mattson also clocked a PR, finishing with a time of 8.94. The two Bulldogs remained in the top half of the field through the high jump as Mattson finished third at 1.66m/ and Norman again set a personal best (1.63m/).
The two Bulldogs slipped back in shot put, but regained their footing in the long jump. Norman climbed up to sixth heading into the final event while Mattson moved just ahead of her teammate into fifth as the two took fourth and fifth in the event.
In one of their best events, the two closed out the competition placing second and third in the 800 meters. Mattson clocked in at 2:22.39, but her time was just a under second behind New Mexico's Kyra Mohns who placed third overall in pentathlon, as she held off Mattson by 16 points.
Norman ended the competition with 3,659 points to place sixth.
Day two for the Bulldogs will begin with the long jump at noon PT. Friday will feature the long jump, weight throw and high jump, along with prelims on the track.
