Dear Fresno State alumni, fans and supporters,
Â
It is amazing how quickly time moves. Here we are already in February and our winter/spring sports are beginning to cross over. It is a very busy, but exciting time of year for us!
Â
Coach Terry and Coach White have their basketball teams in the home stretch of their respective seasons, and I hope to see you all at the Save Mart Center as they make their final pushes toward the Mountain West Championship. We will be off to Las Vegas before we know it for the tournament March 5-10. I hope to see many of you there; please stop and say hello.
Â
Wrestling, which is winding down as well, has one home match remaining when we host Oklahoma State on Feb. 18. The outpouring of support for Coach Steiner and his team has been nothing short of spectacular in this inaugural season. We saw 4,395 inside the Save Mart Center last weekend for the Stanford match and I can't wait to see our crowd for Senior Day!
Â
Speaking of new sports, women's water polo will have its home opener this Friday at 5 p.m. I hope to see you at the Aquatics Center for this exciting evening as we welcome this team into the Bulldog Family. I know Coach Benson and her staff are building a team we all will be proud of in and outside of the pool.
Â
It was a tremendous pleasure to sit at the head table and welcome our newest head coach, Jonathan Winder, to Fresno State and the volleyball program. Jonathan brings all the attributes we are striving to find in a head coach. He competed and the highest level as a collegiate student-athlete and has a winning culture as a coach on and off the court. Jonathan and his family have deep roots in California and right here in Fresno. We are all looking forward to starting the volleyball season next year.
Â
If you did not hear, football and Coach Tedford had a very special inaugural season together. Ten wins, a MW championship game appearance and a Hawai'i Bowl victory over Houston garnered well deserved recognition from several national organizations, including an appearance at the AFCA banquet last month to receive one of five Regional Coach of the Year honors. There is a lot to be excited about as we look forward to 2018.
Â
The folks in our ticket office tell me that we have already sold over 400 new football season tickets since the conclusion of last season and are tracking to hit 2,000 new season accounts for the upcoming year. For all of our season ticket holders, renewals will be hitting mail and email boxes very soon. Please fill them out and we will see you in Bulldog Stadium on September 1!
Â
Our student-athletes continue to achieve in and out of their sports and make us proud to call them Bulldogs. This past fall semester, our student-athletes combined to post a 3.14 GPA. In all, 318 student-athletes earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher last fall and 182 student-athletes, accounting for 37 percent of the student-athlete population, had a GPA of 3.5 or higher while 57 Bulldogs recorded a perfect 4.0 GPA last fall.
Â
Looking forward to more success in 2018.
Regards,
Steve RobertelloÂ
