FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State football team held its first spring practice of 2018 on Monday morning at Bulldog Stadium, and the positive energy on the field was palpable. Heading into the sophomore season for head coach Jeff Tedford and Co., this year's first day compared to a season ago was night-and-day.
Â
"From the expectation on how to practice, what the tempo is supposed to be, to having a little bit more of an understanding of what our systems are, it's much different than last year," said Tedford about Monday's practice.
Â
A season ago, Tedford observed how the team entered their first spring practice not knowing how to act around one another, whether it be as simple as a celebration or when to ask a question. Â
Â
"It's a different feel," said senior wide receiver KeeSean Johnson. "Our coaches were all new last year, but now we have a different connection. We know what's going on and we've all bought-in to what we want to do. Today we came out and I feel like everyone had great energy."
Â
Not only did the team that stepped on the field today have 10 wins to reflect on for confidence, the 2018 Bulldogs have 17 returning starters from the squad that turned it around in season one under Tedford.
Â
The offense, which is presumed to be steered by senior quarterback Marcus McMaryion, will have spring and fall practices to settle further into the Bulldogs' playbook after arriving on campus in the middle of fall camp in 2017.
Â
"I mean just being around the guys for an entire year, it's going to work wonders for our offense," McMaryion said. "Just being able to gel with everyone and really get on the same page with all the coaches. I'm excited for what this year will bring."
Â
"He'll get a chance to do it from the foundation up," Tedford said about his senior quarterback. "Last year he kind of hit the ground running mid-stream and was kind of game planning all the way through. Now he gets the foundation of the meetings and the progression of practice."
Â
New players
Monday's practice saw nine new faces suit up: five on offense, three on defense and one special teamer.
