3/19/2018 11:00:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Candice White caps her junior campaign with a record-setting 40 points in the WBI quarterfinals.
FRESNO, Calif. – Down by 22 points at the half to Nevada, Fresno State went on a furious third-quarter flurry in which the Bulldogs outscored the Wolf Pack 29-18, but the surge was not enough as the Bulldogs fell in the quarterfinals of the Women's Basketball Invitational, 86-74, on Monday night at Save Mart Center.
Fresno State's comeback-bid was aided by 26 second-half points junior Candice White set a Fresno State and WBI single-game scoring record with 40 points on 17-of-29 shooting. Freshman Aly Gamez scored 11 of her 17 points in the second half to go along with team-highs of five rebounds and five assists. Nevada was led by 34 points from T Moe, 13 points and nine rebounds from Teige Zeller and 11 points from AJ Cephas.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresno State came out a bit sluggish on offense. The Bulldogs shot 3-of-12 from the field in the opening quarter and tallied eight points. Nevada, however, was in an offensive flow right from the opening tip. The Wolf Pack hit on 9-of-13 from the floor in the first en route to a 20-8 lead after one.
The 'Dogs took a step forward on offense in the second quarter as they scored 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting. Nevada kept its foot on the gas as the Wolf Pack made 8-of-15 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the charity stripe to tally 26 points in the frame to take a 46-24 lead into the locker room.
Candice White led Fresno State in the opening half, scoring 14 of the Bulldogs' 24 first-half points on 6-of-11 shooting.
A different Fresno State team took the floor in the third quarter. The Bulldogs put together two separate 6-0 runs in addition to a 10-0 run to close the quarter to come within 11 of the Wolf Pack at 64-53 heading into the fourth. The 'Dogs were efficient on offense in the period, pouring in 29 points on 13-of-19 from the field, while holding Nevada to 18 points, and turning four Wolf Pack miscues into nine points.
Fresno State outscored the Wolf Pack 13-6 to start the fourth as the Bulldogs got within four at 70-66 with 2:58 left on the clock. But Nevada would hold its own down the stretch as the Wolf Pack ended the game on a 16-8 run to escape with an 86-74 win.
White eclipsed the Fresno State single-game scoring record of 36 points, previously held by Yannick Souvre, by dropping 40 points on 17-of-29 shooting, including 6-of-11 from 3-point range. Twenty-six of White's 40 points came in the second half, her fourth 20-point half of the season.

Head Coach Jamie White
Opening Statement...
"I don't think we came out the way we had planned, although Nevada did. They shot really well and they just kept answering. I didn't think we had our defensive intensity in the first half. In the first half, we shot from the outside and in the second half, we drove the ball to the basket. It was a tale of two halves. It is a hard game to end the season on and we have had some great wins, some great games and some great moments with this team. I feel like they are all in and that is nice as a coach. I think sometimes we have to re-adjust and re-think what we are doing but I am really proud of the team and our year and excited to get going for next year."
On the momentum heading into next year....
"The way I look at it no matter what postseason you are in, it is a game and we took that perspective down to Bakersfield and there are a lot of teams that did not get postseason so let's make the best of it and I think we were really excited and were up for the task. I think any experience you get in postseason is very important and the goal is to go to postseason so sometimes you have to practice and that is what this was."
On Candice White's 40-point performance....
"Obviously Candice is the face of our program right now and has really had a great year and even though the ending is not what we wanted it to be she has grown in so many ways, not only offensively and defensively, but as a leader and has been the voice of calmness. Her teammates know she has the best chance to knock down a shot or to get a layup. It just shows how much they respect her and were able to find her in the offense."
Junior guard Candice White
On setting a new single-game program record with 40 points....
"Honestly, I was not too aware and one of my coaches told me it's March and you never know what can happen in March and we zoned in and that was my focus coming out just trying to get this win."
On looking ahead to the 2018-19 season....
"I wish it was here tomorrow or in a couple days. I am excited for the summer and going on a trip internationally to see what we can do. It is going to be fun."
Freshman guard Aly Gamez
On how much she has grown as a student-athlete during her freshman season....
"At the beginning of the season, it was tough to transition from high school to college but I give my teammates and Coach White a lot of credit. She let me make a lot of mistakes at the beginning of the season and that let me grow as a person and a player, and Candice helped me a lot learning the plays and instilling that confidence in me."
On looking ahead to the 2018-19 season....
"It's excited and I know it is not how we wanted to end the season, but to see how far we have come this season. It is exciting to look ahead."
