The Diamond 'Dogs and Dirtbags play the rubber match of the series on Saturday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Fresno State (15-11) scored double-digit runs for the third time in its last four games scoring in five of its eight times at-bat. The Bulldogs hit a season-best four home runs in the contest as Nolan Demspey hit his second of the season, Carter Bins hit his team-leading sixth, Jeremiah Burks hit number four and freshman Emilio Nogales hit his first career round-tripper.
Dempsey, who entered this weekend's series with only two hits and two RBIs on the season, had his second consecutive three-hit night finishing with a pair of singles, home run and drove in five runs. Designated hitter Torin Goldstein also had a career-best night as he went for three hits, his first career multi-hit game, and added two RBIs and scored two runs.
Bins, JT Arruda and Miles Tomczak each had two hits apiece as eight different 'Dogs had base hits in the game and the 'Dogs finished with 15 on the evening.
On the mound, Ryan Jensen tossed the first four innings of the game allowing four hits, five runs, three earned while striking out seven. He gave way to Jaime Arias who threw the last five innings to pick up his third win of the season as the freshman southpaw only allowed three Dirtbag hits and two unearned runs while striking four.
How It Happened
Long Beach State (11-16) got the high-scoring affair started in the top of third scoring on a bases-loaded walk to center fielder Clayton Andrews and added two more runs on a throwing error by Nogales at first base.
The 'Dogs answered back quickly in the bottom of the frame as Goldstein led off with a double down the right field line, moved to third on a groundout and came home on Dempsey's home run.
The Dirtbags responded with two runs in the top of the fourth to take a 5-2 lead as shortstop Santino Rivera singled through the right side and to score third baseman Shaq Robinson and designated hitter Garrett Nelson would came around to score on the next batter on a wild pitch.
A solo home run to right field by Bins opened the bottom of the fourth & cut the Dirtbags' lead to 5-3 before a four-run bottom of the fifth gave the 'Dogs their first lead of the series.
Dempsey got the scoring started with a single to left-center that drove in Tomczak from second as the freshman right fielder led off with a double down the right field line. The 'Dogs tied the game at 5-5 with a single to right field by Zach Ashford that plated Dempsey from second as a throw from home to second allowed Dempsey to score after rounding third base. Bins followed with a double down the left field line to drive in Jeremiah Burks and Ashford to give Fresno State a 7-5 advantage.
LBSU tied the game one final time at 7-7 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth scoring on back-to-back singles by Andrews and first baseman Jacob Hughey.
The 'Dogs took back the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth with a seven-run frame as a one-out solo shot by Burks to left-center got the offense started and a bases-loaded walk to Zach Presno brought in Arruda from third base to give the Bulldogs a 9-7 lead.
After Nogales struck out for the second out of the inning, the 'Dogs came through with five key insurance runs as a single up the middle Goldstein scored both Bins and Ashford and put the Bulldogs ahead 11-7.
With hitting contagious all night, the 'Dogs kept the hot offense going with a single to left field by Tomczak that scored Presno before Dempsey finished off the high-scoring frame with a two-run single to left field driving in Tomczak and Goldstein.
Nogales smacked a home run to right-center in the bottom of the eighth to end the scoring for the night as the 'Dogs eight-run margin of victory was the largest of the season.
