Behind a complete game two-hitter from Bulldog hurler Edgar Gonzalez, the Diamond 'Dogs defeated Long Beach State, 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Bob Bennett Stadium to secure the series win over the Dirtbags.
FRESNO, Calif. - Behind a complete game two-hitter from Bulldog hurler Edgar Gonzalez, the Diamond 'Dogs defeated Long Beach State, 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Bob Bennett Stadium to secure the series win over the Dirtbags.
The junior right-hander from Newark, Calif. limited Long Beach State (11-17) to two hits, both singles, while retiring 21 straight from the third to the ninth innings. Gonzalez finished with 11 strikeouts and walked none.
Fresno State (16-11) was held to three hits on the afternoon by Dirtbag pitching, but all three base knocks went for extra-bases as junior right fielder Nolan Dempsey kept his hot week from the plate going smacking his third home run of the season. JT Arruda and Jeremiah Burks each added their sixth doubles of the season.
LBSU starting pitcher Clayton Andrews tossed six innings allowing two hits, two runs, two walks while striking out 11. Relief pitchers Eli Villalobos and Chris Rivera tossed the final two innings pitching one inning apiece.
How It Happened
After three scoreless innings from Gonzalez, allowing one single in the first and second, the 'Dogs got the scoring started in the bottom of the third with Dempsey's line drive home run to left field.
The 'Dogs added a key insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out double down the left field by Arruda that scored Dempsey from second after the San Mateo native reached base after being hit by a pitch to lead off the frame.
That was all the offense Gonzalez needed as the Bulldog did not allow a single baserunner over the final seven innings of the game.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On Gonzalez' complete game….
"I remember telling you after that 17-strikeout performance, which was pretty Weaver-like, and he was in that same mold today. Now, his last two times out, he has really pitched with his fastball. We saw a ton of downhill fastballs today. That is what has changed in his last two outings."
On the Dirtbags….
"Long Beach plays as tough of baseball as anyone you're going to play. If you take those calls you don't like (at the plate) out into the field, you're not likely to finish with zero errors."
On Nolan Dempsey…..
"His junior college coach said that at some point, you won't be able to not play him. And that's exactly what has happened. If he can keep this up and if you want to have championship seasons, that's what has to happen."
On putting Korby Batesole back in the lineup after sitting out yesterday….
"The way Long Beach plays, we had to get our best defense on the field."
On next week's outlook….
"We're not good enough to look past Wednesday. We've got some pitchers we're trying to get back on track. It's been a couple weeks since we've played defense like we did today. If we're going to get rolling, we have to play defense like we did today. We're also swinging the bats better than we did at the beginning."
Notes
- The Bulldogs improve to 61-52 all-time against the Dirtbags with their two wins in the series while Coach Batesole goes to 6-3 against the Dirtbags & 5-1 at home.
- The 'Dogs improve to 15-5 at home on the season.
- Zach Ashford reached base in all three games in the series and has now been on base in 29 straight games.
- It was the 14th game (out of 27) that has been decided by 1-2 runs. The 'Dogs are 9-5 in those contests.
