SAN FRANCISCO - Using a three-run top of the first inning, the Diamond 'Dogs led from start to finish on Wednesday afternoon over San Francisco defeating the Dons, 9-1 at Benedetti Diamond.
Fresno State (17-11), winners of four of its last five games, was held to only seven hits in the game, but took advantage of nine walks issued by San Francisco (18-11). JT Arruda was the lone Bulldog with multiple hits in the game as the redshirt freshman hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season and scored a season-high four runs.
Redshirt senior designated hitter Torin Goldstein went 1-for-1 in his lone plate appearance of the day driving in a pair of runs while freshman right fielder Miles Tomczak also had a single and a pair of RBIs. Junior center fielder Zach Ashford added a single, RBI and scored a run while extending his on-base streak to all 26 games this season and 30 games overall.
On the mound, the 'Dogs used a combination of six pitchers to limit the Dons to eight hits and one run as sophomore right-hander Davis Moore notched his second win of the season tossing two innings while striking out three. The other five Bulldog pitchers were all either true or redshirt freshman.
"That was a high quality win against a top-notch team," said head coach Mike Batesole. "When we play great defense and pitch like we did today, we are going to be in a lot of games."
How It Happened
The 'Dogs jumped all over the Dons with a three-run top of the first that saw San Francisco starting pitcher Benji Post issue walks to four of the seven batters he faced. A two-out walk to designated hitter Emilio Nogales brought home Ashford for the game's first run and Goldstein followed with a single through the right side driving home Arruda and Carter Bins for an early 3-0 lead.
A solo home run to right-center by Arruda to start the third inning pushed the 'Dogs lead to 4-0 before the Dons got on the board with their lone run of the contest in the bottom of the frame with a single to center field by designated hitter Riley Helland.Â
The Bulldogs padded their lead to seven with a four-run top of the fifth as Nick Warren got the scoring started drawing a one-out walk with the bases loaded off Dons relief pitcher Alex Pham. Tomczak followed Warren by lacing a single to left-center to score a pair of runs and Ashford closed the scoring with a single up the middle to drive in Warren as that proved more than enough offense for the 'Dogs.
A sacrifice fly by Warren in the ninth gave him two RBIs for the game as the redshirt senior had his first multi-RBI game of the season.
Notes
- It is only the second road win of the season for the Bulldogs as the 'Dogs improve to 2-6 away from Bob Bennett Stadium this season.
- The Bulldogs sweep the season series over the Dons after winning 3-2 at home on March 6.
- The eight-run margin of victory matched the season-best for the 'Dogs who also defeated Long Beach State by eight on March 30.
- Over the last six games, the 'Dogs have scored 59 runs, 72 hits, 15 doubles, 11 home runs and are hitting .324 as a team.
