The Diamond 'Dogs opened their series at New Mexico on Friday night with a dominating 15-5 win and will go for their first-ever series win in Albuquerque on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. PT.
Fresno State (18-11, 5-8 MW) smacked out 16 hits in the contest as a season-high 10 went for extra-bases. The 'Dogs torched New Mexico (12-15-1, 6-7 MW) for a season-best seven doubles and added one triple & two home runs as a total of eight Bulldogs registered at least one hit and nine scored at least one run.
Jeremiah Burks matched his season-high with three hits, all doubles, while reaching base in all five at-bats drawing a walk and a hit by pitch. The junior second baseman also matched his career-high with three runs scored and three RBIs.
Sophomore catcher Carter Bins also had a standout performance from the plate driving in a career-high five RBIs while matching his career-best with three hits and two doubles and scored one run.
Four other Bulldogs had two hits apiece as freshman Emilio Nogales tallied a double, triple and scored two runs, Torin Goldstein had a pair of singles and two RBIs, Miles Tomczak smacked a double and home run and Nolan Dempsey added two hits and scored two runs.
On the mound, sophomore right-hander Ryan Jensen notched his first win of the season tossing 6.0 innings while allowing 10 hits, five runs, three earned, one walk and struck out three. Freshman southpaw Jaime Arias tossed a scoreless seventh before redshirt freshman Tiegen Jones pitched the final two innings in the contest.
How It Happened
A wild start to the start of the game saw the 'Dogs score three runs in the top of the first as Zach Ashford led off with a walk and was followed by a double to right-center by Burks to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Bins delivered a two-run double to right-center to give the 'Dogs a early 2-0 lead before the Bulldogs added one more run taking advantage of a Lobo error to score Bins from second.
The Lobos answered back with a pair of runs on back-to-back singles by designated hitter Derek Marshall and first baseman Connor Mang to cut the 'Dogs lead to 3-2.
Tomczak led off the top of the second with a solo home run to right-center for his third home run of the season to put the 'Dogs up 4-2 and Fresno State kept the offense going in the third inning adding a run taking advantage of one of four Lobo error in the games as a knock by Goldstein brought in Nogales who led off the frame with his second triple of the season.
New Mexico cut the 'Dogs lead to 5-3 in the bottom of the third with an RBI single by third baseman Hayden Schilling that scored left fielder Danny Collier who led off the inning with a double down the left field line.
The 'Dogs added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings as Burks scored in the fourth on a two-out wild pitch while a RBI single up the middle by Goldstein drove in Nogales in the fifth.
The Lobos kept the 'Dogs within arms length getting one run back in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI double by Marshall to left-center to cut the 'Dogs lead to 7-4, but that would be as close as New Mexico would get as Fresno scored eight of the final nine runs in the game.
Bins tacked on two runs in the top of the fifth with a double to left-center that drove in Burks and JT Arruda before the Lobos got one back in the bottom of the frame to make it 9-5 in favor of the 'Dogs.
The Bulldogs added one run in the seventh on a single through the left side by Bins before a five-run top of the eighth, highlighted by a bases-clearing double by Burks, gave the 'Dogs their largest margin of win of the season.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On starting pitcher Ryan Jensen's outing....
"Jensen was fantastic tonight only getting into one three-ball count all game and when have stuff like he does and you are throwing it over the plate, that makes it really tough on the other team. New Mexico took some great swings and for Jensen to get through six innings against that offense is outstanding."
On the 'Dogs offense tonight....
"Their starting pitcher Justin Slaten beat us at our place and I know our guys make a conscious adjustment that that was not going to happen again tonight. We made a terrific adjustment and that is something you see older teams do and we jumped at fastballs and had a lot of opposite field hits which was great to see."
On Burks' outstanding performance tonight...
"It is really nice to see all his hard work pay off and when you see a student-athlete who plays as hard and is as mentally tough as he is, it is great to see him rewarded for his work and that is very satisfying to watch."
Notes
- It was only the fourth-ever win for Fresno State over New Mexico in Albuquerque joining one win in 2015 and a pair of wins in 2017.

- Burks came into the game with six doubles all season and 10 in his career and had never hit more than one in a game.
