Diamond 'Dogs win extra-inning thriller, 7-6 to clinch first-ever series win at New Mexico

An 11th inning sacrifice fly by Nolan Dempsey proved to be the difference on Saturday afternoon at Santa Ana Star Field as the Diamond 'Dogs won a hard-fought 7-6 battle over New Mexico to seal their first-ever series win over the Lobos in Albuquerque.
Despite Fresno State (19-11, 6-8 MW) taking a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning, New Mexico (12-16-1, 6-8 MW) was able to scrap out four runs to tie the game at 5-5 to force the contest to extra innings. Both teams plated a run in the 10th inning pushing the contest to the 11th where back-to-back singles to leadoff by Korby Batesole and Emilio Nogales proved to be too much to overcome for the Lobos.
A day after smacking out 16 hits, which included a season-high 10 for extra-bases, the 'Dogs matched their season-high with 18 hits on Saturday, but were held to only one for extra-bases as 17 Bulldog base knocks went for singles.
Continuing to get consistent offensive production throughout the lineup, four 'Dogs tallied three hits apiece with Zach Ashford, JT Arruda, Torin Goldstein and Dempsey combining for 12 hits on the afternoon. Arruda matched his season-bests for hits (3) and RBIs (4) while Ashford and Goldstein each matched their career-highs with three hits. Dempsey had his third three-hit performance in the last six games while scoring a season-high three runs and added a pair of RBIs.
On the mound, junior right-hander Edgar Gonzalez continued to dominant tossing 6.0 innings limiting the Lobos to four hits, one earned run while striking out five. Gonzalez has now tossed at least six innings in seven of his eight starts this season and has five or more strikeouts in all eight starts.
Freshman southpaw Nikoh Mitchell came in for 1.2 innings of work before giving way to freshman right-hander Jamison Hill with two outs in the eighth. The freshman right-hander from San Diego finished it out for the 'Dogs tossing the final 3.1 innings to pick up his second win of the season as he allowed two hits, one earned run and struck out one.
How It Happened
For the fourth straight game, the 'Dogs got the scoring started with a three-run top of the second lacing out five singles in the frame perfectly placing them around the field to elude the Lobo defense. After Nogales led off the frame with a flyout to left field, the Bulldogs put together four straight one-out singles as Dempsey and Ashford collected RBI hits and Arruda gave the 'Dogs a 3-0 lead with a single through the right side.
The 'Dogs padded their lead to 5-0 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth on a two-run RBI single up the middle by Arruda, but New Mexico would respond by breaking up Gonzalez's shutout bid with a two-out double to right field by second baseman Justin Watari in the bottom of the sixth. With the run allowed, Watari ended Gonzalez's scoreless innings streak at 16.2 innings as the Bulldog starter exited after six innings.
The Lobos continued to cut into the Bulldogs lead tying the game at 5-5 in the bottom eighth scoring four runs off Mitchell getting a two-run RBI single up the middle by center fielder Brayden Merritt, a sacrifice fly by left fielder Chris Dunn and a single to right field by right fielder Jared Mang.
With the game tied entering the top of the ninth, the 'Dogs loaded the bases with no outs, but Lobo relief pitcher Malachi Edmond was able to escape the jam unharmed and Hill used a key double play to get New Mexico out in the bottom of the inning to send the game to extra innings.
The 'Dogs took a short-lived 6-5 lead in the top of the 10th on a sacrifice fly by Arruda, but again New Mexico answered right back in the bottom of the frame with a one-out single up the middle by third baseman Hayden Schilling.
Much like the ninth inning, the 'Dogs loaded the bases with no outs to start the 11th on singles by Batesole and Nogales which was followed by a walk to Goldstein. A fielder's choice saw Batesole get thrown out at home for the first out of the inning, but Dempsey came through one batter later sending a fly ball deep enough to center field to drive in Nogales for the game-winning run.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On gutting out a victory today over the Lobos.....
"Everybody is out there fighting and you could see the fight in their eye and when you have that you let them stay in there and ride it out. It is great to have guys who are this young who can make in-game adjustments like they can and that gives you great hope for the future."
