The Diamond 'Dogs continued its hot-hitting from the plate on Sunday afternoon holding on for a 11-6 victory at New Mexico at Santa Ana Star Field to complete a three-game series sweep of the Lobos and give Fresno State its sixth straight win.
With the win, Fresno State (20-11, 7-8 MW) has now won six straight games and scored double-digit runs for the sixth time over its last nine games as the 'Dogs continued their hot-hitting from the plate.
For a seventh time in that nine-game stretch, the 'Dogs finished with double-figure hits totaling 12 hits in the contest. A day after being held to one extra-base knock, the Bulldogs had three on Sunday with a pair of home runst as sophomore Carter Bins hit his team-leading seventh of the season while junior Jeremiah Burks smacked his fifth longball of the year.
Torin Goldstein completed his impressive series at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance for his third three-hit in his last five games played. On the series, the redshirt senior went 8-for-12 with three RBIs and scored a run. Three other 'Dogs had two hits each as Zach Ashford, Burks and Bins all had multi-hit games.
Ashford reached base for a 33rd straight game with a single, double and scored two runs. Burks matched his career-high with three RBIs while scoring two runs and Bins scored a pair of runs and drove in three RBIs as well.
On the mound, Davis Moore picked up his third win of the season tossing 5.2 innings allowing 11 hits and six earned runs, but the Bulldog offense scored enough to give the sophomore right-hander his second win of the week and move him to 3-1 on the season. Arias pitched the final two innings for the 'Dogs to notch his first career save matching his season-high with five strikeouts.
How It Happened
For its fifth straight game, Fresno State got the scoring started putting up three quick runs in the top of the first taking advantage of walks to Burks and JT Arruda to put a pair of runners on for Bins who smashed a wind-aided down the right field line and out of the ballpark.
The Lobos got one run back in the bottom of the second on a fielder's choice by catcher Robby Campillo, but the Bulldogs quickly answered back with three runs in the top of the third as Burks tacked on two runs on a home run to right-center and an RBI groundout by Zach Presno extended the 'Dogs lead to 6-1.
The Bulldogs added two more runs in the top of the fourth for a 8-1 lead stringing together four straight one-out hits as a single by Nolan Dempsey was followed by a double by Ashford before back-to-back RBI singles by Burks and Arruda.
New Mexico (12-17-1, 6-9 MW) made a late push answering back with five straight runs scoring one run in the bottom of the fourth, three more in the fifth and one final run in the sixth to cut the game to 8-6. The Lobos threatened to tie the game in the eighth bringing the go-ahead run to the plate with no outs after opening the frame by drawing a pair of walks.
As they did all series long, Bulldog freshman handled adverse situations with veteran presence as Arias came on in relief to strand a pair of New Mexico baserunners in scoring position with a pair of strikeouts. Arias struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to lock up his first career save and give the Bulldogs the series sweep.
