The Diamond 'Dogs squeezed out a 3-2 win over San Francisco on Tuesday night. The 'Dogs host New Mexico for their Mountain West home opener on Friday at 6:05 p.m.
FRESNO, Calif. - Taking advantage of an error in the seventh inning by San Francisco, the Diamond 'Dogs squeezed out a hard-fought 3-2 win on Tuesday evening over the Dons at Bob Bennett Stadium.
With freshman pinch-hitter Emilio Nogales leading off the bottom of the seventh with a walk, junior Auston Chastain came on to pinch-run moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Warren before coming around to score on a single by Korby Batesole as the throw got away from USF shortstop Michael Perri allowing Chastain to score the eventual game-winning run.
A contest where runs and hits were at a premium, Fresno State (9-5) out their opponent for the ninth time this season edging San Francisco (6-5), 8-5 in hits. Batesole and junior Jeremiah Burks each led the way with a pair of singles. After notching at least three extra-base hits in all three games of their series at UNLV over the weekend, the 'Dogs were limited to one extra-base knock on Tuesday, a first inning double by Carter Bins.
On the mound, six pitchers combined to limit the Dons to five hits, one for extra-bases, two runs, only one earned while combining to strike out 13. Freshman left-hander Nikoh Mitchell improved to 2-0 tossing 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Fellow freshman Jamison Hill came on to strike out the final two Dons batters to lock up his third save of the season.
How It Happened
USF struck first right with a single and double in the top of the first before scoring the game's first run with a sacrifice fly by Ross Puskarich. The 'Dogs evened the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly by Warren for his second RBI of the season driving in McCarthy Tatum.
The Dons quickly answered back with a run in the third to take a 2-1 lead scoring an unearned run as a Bulldog fielding error allowed USF left fielder Jonathan Allen to get on base. After stealing second base, Allen came around to score on a single to left field by Perri.
The Bulldogs evened the game at two apiece in the bottom of the fifth when Warren led off reaching on a USF error by the third baseman. After Austin White picked up his first career hit with a single back up the middle to move Warren to second, a sacrifice bunt by Zach Ashford and a sacrifice fly by Batesole brought Warren home to tie the game.
With the 'Dogs taking the lead in the seventh, four pitchers recorded the final six outs as Mitchell recorded the first out of the eighth before Ryan Sullivan came on for one out followed by two outs for JJ Santa Cruz and two for Hill.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On the win tonight over the Dons...Â
"It was a good team win. A lot of guys came in and did their parts on the mound. I think we got eight of nine of their leadoff hitters out which you have to do against USF because they play that inside out game and they are really good at it. It was a good team win and there was some good team defense. We moved runners over with some sacrifices and with this team, I am going to have to be a fan of them because that is just how we are going to have to play. When we have done it that way, we have won and we have outstanding infield defense and if we continue to pitch like we are pitching and scratch out some offense, tha is how we are going to have to win this year."
On Austin White getting his first hit.....
" I love that guy. In my 25 years of coaching, he has about a big of heart as anyone I have ever coached and to see him persevere is awesome. He is not the player he was when we recruited him because of some major injuries and not that he won't be some day, but to see him fight and grind is great."
On this weekend's series against New Mexico....Â
"This one is now the most important and is always circled on your calendar. We have played them very successful at home, not so much on the road. I think we have cracked that nut a little bit and we are going to come out and play with confidence. We want to practice like we are in second place and play like we are in first place. I love when you can get a team to do that and we are going to come out Friday ready to roll."
Notes
- The Bulldogs improved to 9-1 on the season at home.
- Fresno State moves to 6-3 in one-run games and it was the 10th game this season decided by one or two runs.

- Sophomore pitcher Davis Moore saw his second action of the season tossing two scoreless innings setting a new career-high for strikeouts with four.
- Zach Ashford now has a hit in all 12 games he has played in this season and is hitting .467 on the season.
