Lobos storm back to top Diamond 'Dogs, 5-4 in MW home opener

The Diamond 'Dogs dropped their Mountain West home opener to New Mexico, 5-4 on Friday night at Bob Bennett Stadium. Game two of the series is on Saturday afternoon at 12:05 p.m.
FRESNO, Calif. - Taking a 4-0 lead into the top of the eighth inning, the Fresno State baseball team was unable to hold on to its lead against visiting New Mexico falling 5-4 on Friday night at Bob Bennett Stadium.
With Fresno State (9-6, 0-4 MW) able to build a four-run cushion and needing only six outs to secure its first Mountain West win of the season, New Mexico (6-6-1, 2-2 MW) had other plans as the Lobos were able to scratch across two runs in the eighth and tack on three more in the ninth for a furious comeback win.
The 'Dogs were led on the night offensively by a career-best performance from second baseman Jeremiah Burks as the junior tallied a career-high three hits, including smacking his third home run of the season. The top two hitters in the Bulldogs order, junior Zach Ashford and senior Korby Batesole, each recorded a pair of hits as Ashford laced his second triple of the year and scored a run while Batesole had a pair of singles and drove in a run.
Sophomore right-hander Ryan Jensen had his third quality start of the season on the mound tossing six innings allowing only four hits, no runs, while walking four and striking out six. The Bulldog bullpen did not fair as well as JJ Santa Cruz, Ryan Sullivan and Jamison Hill combined to allow six hits, five runs, four earned, two walks while striking out one.
How It Happened
After a scoreless opening inning, Burks' got the 'Dogs on the board first in the second inning with a leadoff home run to left field. The sixth time this season Fresno State has struck first, the Bulldogs added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth as freshman right fielder Miles Tomczak led off the frame with his first career home run to put the 'Dogs up 2-0.
Ashford followed with a triple down the right field line, but a pair of strikeouts looking stranded Ashford as the 'Dogs were unable to add to the lead. The Lobos continued to threaten to break up the 'Dogs shutout bid loading the bases in the top of the seventh as Sullivan came on with the bases loaded and two outs getting Derek Marshall to groundout to Burks at second base.
The 'Dogs added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh as a Batesole single through the left side drove in Tomczak from third and an RBI sacrifice bunt by Carter Bins plated Ashford.
It turned out to not be enough as the Lobos scored a pair of runs in the eighth, both charged to Sullivan, on a walk and a sacrifice fly before scoring three, only two earned, off Hill in the ninth.
UNM right fielder Chris Dunn and designated hitter Derek Marshall led off the ninth with back-to-back solo home runs tying the game at 4-4 before a Bulldog error allowed catcher Robby Campillo to get on base as the Lobo sophomore came around to score the eventual game-winning run on a two-out single to right field by left fielder Danny Collier.
The 'Dogs were unable to mount a rally in the bottom of the ninth as Lobo closer Christian Tripp secured his third save of the season retiring the Bulldogs in order.
The Bulldogs and Lobos play game two of the three-game weekend series on Saturday afternoon at 12:05 p.m. It is Greek Day as we honor fraternities and sororities and it is also Youth Jersey Saturday as all kids wearing their youth jerseys get into the game for FREE!
