The Diamond 'Dogs recorded their first Mountain West victory of the season on Saturday afternoon defeating New Mexico, 5-1 behind a stellar pitching performance from junior right-hander Edgar Gonzalez.
FRESNO, Calif. - Behind a stellar performance from junior right-handed pitcher Edgar Gonzalez, the Diamond 'Dogs notched their first Mountain West victory of the season on Saturday afternoon defeating New Mexico, 5-1 at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Gonzalez was absolutely spectacular on the mound Saturday for Fresno State (10-6, 1-4 MW) tossing seven innings allowing four hits, only one for extra bases, one earned run, a walk while striking out seven. Already claiming two Mountain West Pitcher of the Week honors this season, Gonzalez improves to 3-0 and has 39 strikeouts in 28.0 innings of work.
The Bulldog offense was led by the duo of McCarthy Tatum and Zach Presno who each had a pair of base hits, including Presno's second home run of the season.
Zach Ashford added his fifth double of the season as the junior outfielder now has a base hit in all 13 games he has played in this season.
Freshman left-hander Jaime Arias came on in relief of Gonzalez to work two scoreless innings matching his season-high with five strikeouts.
How It Happened
Much like Friday's series opener, the Bulldogs got the action started first on Saturday with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second as the 'Dogs took advantage of a Lobo error to extend the inning. Junior second baseman Jeremiah Burks was able to reach base after an error by the New Mexico shortstop as Presno followed with a blast to left field to give Fresno State an early 2-0 lead.
The 'Dogs added two more unearned runs in the bottom of third again taking advantage of Lobo defensive blunder as Ashford scored after a throwing error by Lobo starting pitcher Robert Gasser and catcher Carter Bins came around to score on an RBI single up the middle by Tatum.
Facing only three batters over the minimum through the first six innings, Gonzalez's shutout bid ended in the seventh as the Lobos scored a run on a fielder's choice after loading the bases with one out as a diving stop by Bulldog shortstop Korby Batesole limited the damage. Gonzalez was able to strike out Lobo shortstop Garrett Gouldsmith to escape the jam.
Fresno State added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame on a bases-loaded walk by Burks brought in Bins to make the score 5-1 as the Lobos were unable to threaten Arias in the final two innings.

On getting at-bats for freshman Zach Presno....
"I have been trying hard to get him in there and he is the one guy who should be playing more than he is so whatever way I can get him in the lineup, he is in there."
