Diamond 'Dogs hold off New Mexico for a 5-4 victory to earn first MW series win

The Diamond 'Dogs held off a ninth-inning rally from visiting New Mexico for a 5-4 win over the Lobos on Sunday afternoon at Bob Bennett Stadium.
With the potential game-tying run on third base with two outs in the top of the ninth, Bulldog freshman relief pitcher Jamison Hill was able to strike out Lobo pinch-hitter Daniel Herrera to secure the Bulldog victory.
Fresno State (11-6, 2-4 MW) tallied eight hits in the game off Lobo pitching with leadoff hitter Zach Ashford going 2-for-4 with an RBI while designated hitter Zach Presno hit his second home run in as many days and drove in two runs.
On the mound, the 'Dogs used four pitchers to limit New Mexico (6-8-1, 2-4 MW) to nine hits and four runs. After starting pitcher Oscar Carvajal allowed four hits and three runs in the first inning, sophomore right-hander Davis Moore came on in relief in the second to toss four shutout innings and strike out a career-high seven.
Freshman southpaw Nikoh Mitchell worked three shutout innings from the sixth through the eighth limiting the Lobos to one hit and struck out four while picking up his third win of the season. Hill converted his fourth save of the season in the ninth striking out a pair.
How It Happened
The Lobos jumped right on Carvajal in the top of the first sprinting out to a 3-0 lead with three straight RBI hits from Chris Dunn, Derek Marshal and Robby Campillo.
After Moore came in to settle down New Mexico in the second and third, the 'Dogs got on the board in the bottom of the third with an RBI single to left field by Ashford that brought in freshman right fielder Miles Tomczak.
The Bullldogs kept the offense going evening the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth on RBI singles by Jeremiah Burks and Tomczak. With Moore giving way to Mitchell on the mound, the bullpen kept the Lobos off the scoreboard from the second through the eighth inning allowing the 'Dogs to take the lead for good in the sixth inning on Presno's two-out solo home run to right field.
A much-needed insurance run came via Presno in the eighth inning on a single to left field off New Mexico reliever Drew Gillespie to put the 'Dogs up 5-3.
After a leadoff walk by Hill to Dan Zakosek started the top of the ninth, the Lobo pinch-hitter would come around to score off a groundout to Burks at second. With leadoff hitter and left fielder Danny Collier smacking a double and moving to third on the groundout by Zakosek, Hill struck out Jeff Deimling and Herrera to end the threat.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On Davis Moore returning to the weekend rotation....
"I think we are there with him and he is ready. The time is here to let him go and we have him there and he is right where we want him to be."
On freshman closer Jamison Hill.....
"He grew up a whole lot this weekend and we keep giving him the ball in crutch time and what he experienced on Friday blowing a save, he is learning so much and gaining valuable experience. He is very talented and he can often get away with some pitches and today he was smart and good. You can look forward to great things from him the next three years."
On the freshman playing a large role in today's victory....
"These guys are right in the fight and developing some very thick skin. It is great to learn while you are winning and we are going to rely on them a lot."
On the next five games being on the road...
"We will keep pushing and practice on Tuesday with a long list of things to work and that makes the practice plan this time of year. You get to the fundamentals and away we go getting ready for Wednesday and and next weekend."
On Zach Ashford's great start to the season from the plate....
"As a coach, when someone is this hot, you get out of his way and let him ride. He works at it so hard and was the first one here this morning and is always trying to get better."
