The Diamond 'Dogs were shut down on Saturday afternoon by San Jose State starting pitcher Josh Goldberg falling 4-1 at Municipal Stadium.
SAN JOSE, Calif. - After a five-day break and a pair of rained-out games, Fresno State Baseball was back in action on Saturday afternoon falling 4-1 to San Jose State at Municipal Stadium.
Fresno State (11-7, 2-5 MW) was held to seven hits in the game by San Jose State (7-9, 1-5 MW) pitcher Josh Goldberg as the senior right-hander tossed a complete game limiting the 'Dogs to one unearned run while walking two and striking out five.
Junior center fielder Zach Ashford tallied his 10th multi-hit game of the season with a pair of singles and drove in the lone run of the game in the eighth inning. The Clovis native also extended his hitting streak to 17 games as he has a hit in all 16 games he has played in this season along with the final game of 2017.
Jeremiah Burks and Torin Goldstein each added doubles as the 'Dogs were unable to get more than two hits in any frame.
The Spartans countered with 10 hits, only one for extra bases, as four Bulldog pitchers threw in the game combining for six strikeouts, but issued five walks and hit two batters.
How It Happened
The Spartans got the scoring started in the bottom of the first with a leadoff double by center fielder Kellen Strahm off Bulldog starting pitcher Edgar Gonzalez who came around to score on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Shane Timmons for his team-leading 18th RBI of the season.
SJSU extended its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third with an RBI single through the right side by right fielder Chris Williams. The Spartans attempted to add to the lead loading the bases with one out after a walk by Gonzalez to third baseman David Campbell, but the 'Dogs were able to turn their 12th double play of the season to limit the damage.
With Gonzalez's outing finished after six innings and three earned runs allowed, the Spartans added an unearned run in the seventh off relief pitcher JJ Santa Cruz as a throwing error by the Bulldog southpaw allowed left fielder Brett Bautista to advance from first to third before a Williams single to left field brought in Bautista to make it 4-0 in favor of San Jose State.
The 'Dogs broke up Goldberg's shutout bid in the top of the eighth on an RBI single to right field by Ashford driving in pinch-runner Austin White, but the rally ended as Ashford was throw out at second base trying to advance on the throw. Earlier in the inning, pinch-hitter Emilio Nogales, who led off the frame reaching on a Spartan error, was thrown out at home attempting to score from first on a double to right-center by Goldstein.
A two-out single to right field by JT Arruda in the top of the ninth gave the 'Dogs some last-minute hope, but a strikeout by Burks ended the 'Dogs threat.
Notes
- It was Burks' seventh career double and Goldstein's second.
- Gonzalez finished with six strikeouts and has at least six K's in all five starts this season.
- The five days off for the Bulldogs between games was the longest stretch off since 2015 when the 'Dogs had five days between games on April 4 (at UCSB) and April 10 (vs. Nevada).
- The one run scored was the second-fewest runs the 'Dogs have scored in a game this season.
- The Bulldogs turned a season-high four double plays in the game and now have 15 on the season.
