Behind a career-high four hits from junior second baseman Jeremiah Burks, the Diamond 'Dogs picked up their first road victory of the season on Sunday afternoon splitting a doubleheader at San Jose State.
Fresno State (12-8, 3-5 MW) suffered their worst loss of the season in the first game falling 10-1 before rebounding in the second game for a 6-3 victory.
The 'Dogs were held to five hits in the first game before rebounding for an 11-hit output in the nightcap as Burks led the way tallying three singles and a double while scoring a run and freshman right fielder Miles Tomczak smashed his second home run of the season and drove in four RBIs.
Sophomore catcher Carter Bins was the lone 'Dog to pick up multiple hits in the first game hitting a single and his fourth home run of the season.
On the mound, freshman southpaw Jaime Arias notched his second win of the season in game two while fellow freshman Nikoh Mitchell picked up his first career save.
How It Happened Game 1
Much like in the series opener on Saturday, the Spartans got the scoring started in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by third baseman David Campbell. SJSU threatened to add more runs loading the bases after a walk to second baseman Kyle Morrison by Bulldog starting pitcher Ryan Jensen, but the sophomore right-hander was able to get out of the jam with a bouncer to third base.
San Jose State added three runs in the bottom of the third nearly batting through the entire order as eight Spartans came to the plate in the frame. With left fielder Brett Bautista leading off, a liner right back at Jensen went for a double as the Bulldog hurler had to leave the game for precautionary reasons.
With redshirt freshman Oscar Carvajal coming into the game in relief of Jensen, the Spartans greeted the new pitcher with back-to-back singles by first baseman Shane Timmons and right fielder Chris Williams as Williams' single to right field scored Bautista. Campbell followed with a single to left field to score Timmons before catcher Johnny Mendoza would complete the scoring with a two-out double to left field to make it 4-0 in favor of the Spartans.
San Jose State (8-10, 2-6 MW) starting pitcher Andrew Mitchel able to work through the Bulldog order the first time without allowing a hit, Bins broke up Mitchel's shutout bid to lead off the top off the fourth shooting a ball down the left field line to get the 'Dogs on the board.
SJSUÂ added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning capitalizing on a throwing error by Carvajal to score one run before a sacrifice bunt by Mendoza made it 6-1. After one shutout inning apiece from Tiegen Jones and Isaiah Davis in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, the Spartans tacked on four runs in the eighth off three Bulldog relievers to hand the 'Dogs a 10-1 defeat.
How It Happened Game 2
Getting a definite sense of deja vu, the Spartans took the lead to start the game for the third time in the series scoring a run in the bottom of the first on a single back up the middle by Williams to drive home Bautista.Â
The 'Dogs wasted little time answering back with three runs in the top of the second as catcher Zach Presno drew a one-out walk and first baseman Emilio Nogales singled to right field putting a pair of runners on base for Tomczak who cleared the bases with a bomb to right field giving Fresno State a 3-1 lead.
The Bulldogs added a run in the top of the third to take a 4-1 advantage scoring on an RBI groundout to shortstop by Bins. With Davis Moore making his first start on the mound and only allowing two hits through his first four innings of work, the Spartans were able to get to the Bulldog sophomore right-hander for a pair of runs, both charged to him, in the bottom of the fifth to make it a one-run game.
SJSU scored the first run on a single back up the middle by center fielder Kellen Strahm and after Moore walked Williams to load the bases, he was lifted in favor of Arias who came into the game with one out. With shortstop Korby Batesole nearly turning a double play to end the SJSU threat unharmed, Batesole was only able to get one out as Strahm came home to score.
Fresno State added a pair of much-needed insurance runs in the eighth inning on a wild play as Tomczak singled to right field allowing pinch-runner Nolan Dempsey to score from second and freshman first baseman Emilio Nogales to score from first. After looking like he would be called out on a tag at third base, Nogales managed to avoid Campbell's attempt as he continued to run coming into score.
Mitchell worked a scoreless final three innings striking out five as he now has 22 strikeouts in 20.2 innings of work.
Game 1 Notes

Game 2Â Notes

- Ashford saw his 18-game hitting streak come to an end finishing 0-for-4 with a walk. He had got a base hit in the first 17 games he played in this season and the final game of 2017.

- Ashford stole his third base of the season in the fourth inning and now has 11 in his career.
