LA QUINTA, Calif. – After firing a pair of 4-under-par 68s on day one of the Geiberger Invitational, Alex Lee shot a 1-over-par 73 in Tuesday's final round. While Lee didn't card a third straight round in the 60s, he was solid and was able to hold on to the lead as he finished one stroke ahead of runner-up Hayden Shieh of Santa Clara to capture the individual title. It marks the first win by a Bulldog since Trevor Clayton took home the individual crown at the 2016 Mountain West Championship.
Overall, Fresno State finished in fourth place out of 12 teams at 5-under-par, the best finish of the season for the 'Dogs. The Bulldogs were in the hunt during the entirety of the final round but in the end were unable to keep pace with No. 38 BYU and No. 49 Santa Clara, who tied for first place at 8-under-par, and host Loyola Marymount, who took third at 6-under-par.
"It was a great week for the 'Dogs," head coach Chad Spencer said. "We came up just short of the team title but our guys are peaking at the right time of year. Alex played really solid today. I'm so proud of him and how he has played the last few events. This may open the flood gates for him."
Lee carded a team-high 16 pars on Tuesday to go along with a birdie and a double bogey to finish with a 7-under-par 209 for the tournament.
Michael Cliff was near the top of the leaderboard for most of the day, but a 4-over-par on the back nine dropped him into a tie for 14th. Still, the freshman played well and finished at even par for the tournament and second among the 'Dogs.
Lane Pulliam carded an even-par 72 in the third round. The freshman holed 15 pars, two birdies and a double bogey to finish in a tie for 17th.
Cody Riecks put together the best final round of any Bulldog on Tuesday. The redshirt junior fired a 1-under-par 71 and holed a team-high five birdies. Riecks ended play in a tie for 32nd place.
Justin Avery shot a final-round 7-over-par 79. On holes other than No. 3, No. 8 and No. 15, in which he was 8-over-par, Avery carded a collective 1-under-par. The senior finished in a tie for 44th.
