A look at the San Jose State Spartans
San Jose State enters this weekend's series with the Bulldogs with a 12-19 overall record in 2018 and a 4-10 mark in Mountain West play as the Spartans sit a game-and-half behind sixth-place New Mexico.
Two of SJSU's four MW wins have come against the 'Dogs as that was the lone series the Spartans have won in their first five MW series of the season.
The Spartans are hitting .268 from the dish as a team to rank sixth in the MW. SJSU averages 4.8 runs per game to rank seventh in the conference and are also seventh in the league in hits (279), doubles (40) and home runs (7).
Senior outfielder Brett Bautista ranks seventh in the MW with a .370 average and leads the club with 37 hits while scoring 22 runs and driving in 19 RBIs.
Senior infielder Shane Timmons is hitting .304 with 35 hits, five double, three home runs and 30 RBIs.
On the mound, the Spartans have a 6.10 staff ERA, good for fifth in the MW, while opponents are hitting .300 from the plate and have 219 strikeouts while walking 158.
This weekend's starting rotation of Josh Goldberg, Andrew Mitchel and Tevin Cadola will feature two right-handers and one southpaw in Mitchel, a junior college transfer from Grossmont College who has a team-high 44 strikeouts in 39.2 innings of work.
Goldberg and Mitchel both threw against the Bulldogs earlier this season as both picked up victories as Goldberg tossed a complete game in a 4-1 win and Mitchel went 6.0 innings allowing three hits, one run and struck out five in a 10-1 win for SJSU.
Goldstein named MW Player of the Week & Fresno State Athletics Student-Athlete of the Week
After seeing limited action to start the season, redshirt senior Torin Goldstein has started to become a regular in the lineup over the last 10 games and delivered with a standout week from the plate helping the Diamond 'Dogs win four straight road games, including a three-game sweep at New Mexico, leading the team with a .692 average from the plate.
Entering the week with only six hits on the season in 28 at-bats, Goldstein went 9-for-13 on the week and drove in five RBIs and scored a run. He matched his career-high with three hits apiece on Saturday and Sunday combining to go 6-for-8 in the pair of games.
On Tuesday against CSUN, he went a perfect 4-for-4 with three singles and his fourth double of the season as he is now 13-for-17 over his the 'Dogs last five games.
Ashford on a 34-game on-base streak
Junior outfielder Zach Ashford has reached base in all 30 games he has played in this season and has reached base in 34 straight games dating back to 2017. He is currently fifth in the Mountain West with a .372 average from the plate and leads the team with 45 hits. He has a base hit in 27 of the 30 games he has played in this season and has only struck out nine times in 121 at-bats.
Diamond 'Dogs offense coming alive
Over the last 10 games, the 'Dogs are 7-3 hitting .334 from the plate as a team scoring 94 runs and totaling 129 hits with 42 (26 doubles, one triple and 15 home runs) going for extra-bases.
Six Bulldogs have double-digit hits over that stretch led by 16 each from Goldstein & Nolan Dempsey while JT Arruda, Carter Bins. Jeremiah Burks and Ashford each have 14. Freshman outfielder Miles Tomczak has 10 of his 19 hits on the season in that stretch.
Gonzalez leading the Mountain West in strikeouts
Bulldog right-hander Edgar Gonzalez continues to lead the MW with 69 strikeouts and 56.0 innings pitched while ranking second in wins with five and is third in ERA at 2.25 and opposing batting average at .204.
RPI rankings
The 'Dogs have moved up to No. 117 in the RPI rankings while San Jose State is currently ranked No. 210. The 'Dogs have played three top-50 teams in UNLV (39), Nevada (47) and San Diego State (71) while Hawai'i (91) and Air Force (120), who the Bulldogs play later this season, are ranked in the top 120.
Sacrificing for the team
Playing a National League style of play this season, the 'Dogs have to manufacture runs in creative ways and one of those ways is through sacrifice bunts as the 'Dogs have 26 on the season to lead the MW and rank 21st in the nation. Senior shortstop Korby Batesole leads the club and Mountain West with 10, ranking 6th in the country.
Carter Bins named to Johnny Bench Award Watch List
Sophomore catcher Carter Bins was named to the 2018 Johnny Bench Award Watch List on March 6 given annually to the top Division I collegiate catcher. A Freshman All-American and the Co-Mountain West Freshman of the Year in 2017, Bins is off to a great start to his sophomore season starting all 32 games hitting .320 from the plate leading the team in at-bats (125), doubles (12), runs (25), home runs (7), RBI (33) and total bases (73) and ranking second in hits (40).
Ten-year anniversary of the 2008 National Championship Team
On Sunday, Fresno State Athletics will honor the 2008 National Championship Wonderdogs prior to the Bulldogs' game vs. San Jose State as we encourage fans to help come out and honor one of Fresno State Athletics greatest team accomplishments in school history.
The first No. 4 regional seed ever to advance to the College World Series, the 'Dogs proved all the doubters wrong and upset a talented field and came back from a 1-0 deficit to defeat the Georgia Bulldogs in the final two games of the championship series for the title.

The Bulldogs wrap up their five-game homestand on Tuesday night hosting Saint Mary's (17-14) at 6:05 p.m. for T-Shirt Tuesday.
