The Bulldogs go for the series win over the Aztecs on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
SAN DIEGO - After falling behind 2-0 after one inning, the Diamond 'Dogs reeled off seven unanswered runs and limited San Diego State to five hits holding on to defeat the Aztecs, 7-4 on Saturday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
Fresno State (23-15, 9-11 MW), who won its fifth Mountain West road contest in its last six tries, pounded out 13 hits in the contest as junior second baseman Jeremiah Burks led the way with a 3-for-5 performance from the dish driving in three RBIs to match his career high.
Sophomore catcher Carter Bins smacked a pair of doubles, his team-leading 13th & 14th of the season, while scoring three of the 'Dogs seven runs. Redshirt senior first baseman Nick Warren smacked his first triple since March 11, 2015 against Wagner (watch) and added a single for his sixth multi-hit game of the season.
Junior center fielder Zach Ashford extended his on-base streak to 40 games with a seventh-inning triple to right field (watch) and added a single in the ninth.
The 'Dogs two triples in one game was a first this season and it was the first multi-triple game since May 19, 2017 at San Diego State.
On the mound, junior right-hander Edgar Gonzalez picked up his sixth win of the season tossing five innings limiting SDSU to four hits, all singles, two unearned runs, four walks while striking out three.
San Diego native Jamison Hill threw a 1-2-3 sixth inning before giving way to Nikoh Mitchell for the first two outs of the seventh while Davis Moore finished it out with the final 2.1 innings.
How It Happened
San Diego State wasted little time getting on the scoreboard scoring a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the first taking advantage of two Bulldog fielding errors and two walk by Gonzalez to put the 'Dogs in an early 2-0 hole.
The 'Dogs got the scoring started on their end in the top of the third with a single to left field by Warren (watch) before Korby Batesole bounced into a double play in the fourth that allowed Bins to score from third.
With the game tied at 2-2 entering the sixth, Burks' single to left field drove in Bins from second (watch) to give the 'Dogs a one-run lead before a Fresno State broke the contest open with a four-run top of the seventh.
A two-out double by Nolan Dempsey, his second of the season, down the left field line (watch) drove home Ashford who kept the inning alive with his triple. JT Arruda followed with a single through the right side to drive in Dempsey (watch) to put the 'Dogs up 5-2.
Not satisfied with only a three-run lead, Arruda stole second base and after a walk to Bins and a balk Aztec pitcher Casey O'Sullivan moved the pair of 'Dogs into scoring position, Burks came through in the clutch driving in two more runs (watch) with a single to left field.
Those pair of runs proved to be much needed insurance against a strong SDSU lineup as the Aztecs rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth off Moore before the Bulldog sophomore right-hander was able to strand the bases loaded getting Grant Mayeaux to pop out to Batesole at shortstop.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On bouncing back tonight for a much-needed win....
"I can tell you doing this for 25 years, that has to rank in the top 100-150 gutsy wins and we have had a lot of them over the years. This one is right up there after what we went through yesterday to play the way we did. This team has done four or five very gutsy things and this one means a lot more to me than some wins we have because of the adversity we faced yesterday and to come out and to play with that kind of heart is awesome."
On the pitchers performances tonight....
"They all did very well and to do it on the road against a very good team. San Diego State plays this park exceptionally well and it is hard to beat them on your good days much less where we were as a team a before the game. You have to give our student-athletes a lot of credit for being resilient and bouncing back today."
Notes
- The all-time series with the Aztecs is now tied at 99-99 after the teams split the first two games of the series.
