The Diamond 'Dogs return home to host CSUN on Tuesday night at 6:05 p.m. for T-Shirt Tuesday.
SAN DIEGO - The Diamond 'Dogs were unable to get any offense generated on Sunday afternoon falling in the series finale to San Diego State, 7-0 at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
Shutout for only the second time this season, Fresno State (23-16, 9-12 MW) was limited to four hits on the afternoon, its second-fewest in a game this season.
Junior center fielder Zach Ashford extended his on-base streak to 41 games with his 12th double of the season (watch) to lead off the fourth inning.
Sophomore designated hitter Carter Bins smacked his team-leading 15th double in the sixth inning (watch) while Nolan Dempsey and Jeremiah Burks added singles.
On the mound, freshman southpaw Jaime Arias made his second start of the week tossing 5.1 innings allowing seven Aztec hits, four runs, three earned while striking out three. Jamison Hill, Ryan Sullivan and Tiegen Jones tossed the final 2.2 innings of the game.
How It Happened
After a scoreless first three innings, that saw the 'Dogs held without a hit by San Diego State starting pitcher Jorge Fernandez, the Aztecs got the board first with a leadoff home run by first baseman Jordan Verdon. The junior from San Diego, who entered the game sixth in the MW in batting average at .360 and had been held to one hit in the series prior to the at-bat, hit only the fourth home run of the season off Arias.
The Aztecs made it 2-0 in the fifth inning with a leadoff single by second baseman Jacob Maekawa as he moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and a two-out, two-strike single back up the middle by right fielder Chase Calabuig drove home Maekawa.
Looking to tie the game up in the top of the sixth, JT Arruda got the 'Dogs third hit of the game with a two-out single to right field which was followed by Bins' double to left field putting a pair of runners in scoring position for Burks. Unfortunately, a slow roller back to Fernandez was all the Bulldog junior could muster as that was the end of the offensive threats on the afternoon for the 'Dogs.
The Aztecs padded the lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run home run by designated hitter Chad Bible off Hill and SDSU rounded the scoring with a two-run single by catcher Dean Nevarez in the seventh.
