Behind the power of three home runs, the Diamond 'Dogs dominated CSUN, 8-2 on Tuesday night at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Fresno State (24-16) scored runs in six of eight innings and used home runs by Korby Batesole, Nate Thimjon and Jeremiah Burks to secure the win over the Matadors.
Four different Bulldogs tallied multi-hit games in the contest led by Batesole who went 3-for-5 with his first home run of the season, stole his first base of the year and scored two runs. Junior center fielder Zach Ashford extended his on-base streak to 42 games, which now ranks third-longest in the nation, finishing with a single, double and an RBI.
Thimjon smacked his first career home run in his lone official at-bat while tying his season-high with three RBIs and Burks added a pair of hits, including his seventh home run of the season, while driving in two RBIs and scoring two runs.
On the mound, seven different 'Dogs saw action as freshman southpaw Nikoh Mitchell made his fourth start of the season tossing 2.2 innings allowing two hits, one walk while striking out four. Fellow freshman Jamison Hill worked the next 2.1 innings to pick up the win, his third of the campaign, limiting the Matadors to two hits, one run and struck out one. Oscar Carvajal, Tiegen Jones and Isaiah Davis, Ryan Sullivan and Davis Moore all saw action as well.
How It Happened
The 'Dogs got the scoring started early with runs in the first four innings getting a solo home run to right field by Batesole in the first, followed by Thimjon's two-run home run to dead center field in the second inning.
CSUN (17-23), who lost for the seventh time in its last eight games, threatened to cut into the 'Dogs 3-0 lead in the top of the third loading the bases with two outs for Hill who came on in relief of Mitchell. The right-hander from San Diego got Matador third baseman Nolan Bumstead to bounce into a fielder's choice to escape the jam unharmed.
The 'Dogs continued to add to the lead in the bottom of the frame scoring a run on a sacrifice fly to center field by Thimjon that scored Nolan Dempsey from third before Burks' two-run home run to left field in the bottom of the fourth pushed the 'Dogs lead to 6-0.
Hill escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the top of the fifth only allowing one run as CSUN scored on an RBI groundout from left fielder Albee Weiss that scored shortstop Alvaro Rubalcaba from third base to get CSUN on the board.
CSUN added an unearned run in the top of the sixth off Carvajal with a two-out, full-count single back up the middle by second baseman Brandon Bohning that closed the 'Dogs lead to 6-2 as the Matadors brought up the tying run in Weiss, but Carvajal got Weiss to foul out to right field to keep CSUN off the board.
The 'Dogs tacked on a run in the bottom of the seventh on a double down the left field line by Ashford, his 13th of the season, and added one more in the eighth as Burks scored on a wild pitch.
CSUN made one final rally attempt with two outs in the top of the ninth loading the bases with two outs, but Moore came in and struck out Rubalcaba to end the game.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On Thimjon's getting his first home run.....
"These freshman continue to grow a lot throughout the season. They are out here busting their tails and Nate does the same thing and he is continuously in the cage and they are working and working and are not getting satisfied and I love that."
On the freshman pitchers....
"When CSUN still had a chance to catch us and it was still a game, we made some big pitches in those situations and to me that was the highlight of the game is watching those freshman continue to grow and if you have been watching them you can feel today they were on the hunt and on the attack."
On Air Force coming to town this weekend....
"They are a really fun group to watch and I think I would really enjoy coaching that group. You talk about a group of men with terrific attitudes who their priorities in the right order, they are really fun to watch and if fans haven't watched them play, they need to come see them play because they swing the bat like it's the last one they will ever take and run the bases super aggressive. They are a very determined attacking team and we will be ready for that."
Freshman outfielder Nate Thimjon
On hitting his first career home run......
"The pitcher was leaving everything up so I was just trying to attack first-pitch fastball and it ended up working out well."
