Fresno State junior right-handed pitcher Edgar Gonzalez struck out 12 helping the Diamond 'Dogs defeated Air Force, 7-2 on Friday night to win the series opener over the Falcons at Bob Bennett Stadium.
The Bulldog right-hander picked up his seventh victory of the season tossing 7.2 innings limiting Air Force to three hits, two eared runs, two walks while his 12 strikeouts were his second-most in a game in his career. In a four-strikeout top of the third, Gonzalez notched his 200th career strikeout and now has 207 in his career.
Fresno State (25-16, 10-12 MW), who pulled within a half-game of Air Force (19-22, 10-11 MW) in the Mountain West standings with the win, had a steady evening from the plate as seven 'Dogs recorded hits, including three finishing with a pair.
Junior center fielder Zach Ashford extended his on-base streak to 43 games, currently tied for third-longest in the nation, going 2-for-5 with a single, double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Senior shortstop Korby Batesole added a pair of singles and a run while freshman right fielder Miles Tomczak added a double, RBI and run scored.
Freshman Jamison Hill came on to record the final four outs working 1.1 innings allowing two hits while striking out three.
How It Happened
The 'Dogs struck first with three unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning taking advantage of a Falcon error at shortstop scoring one run on a single back up the middle by Torin Goldstein with the bases loaded that bounced off Air Force starting pitcher Tyler Mortenson's glove to drive home Ashford (watch).
Junior left fielder Nolan Demspsey followed with a two-run single through the right side to score Batesole and JT Arruda (watch) as the 'Dogs were in busy early.
A double by Ashford, his 14th of the season, to left-center in the bottom of the fourth extended the 'Dogs lead to 4-0 (watch) and Jeremiah Burks kept the scoring going with a single to center field plating Ashford to make it 5-0.
With Gonzalez retiring nine straight Falcons at one point, from the third to the fifth innings notching five strikeouts over that stretch, the Bulldogs continued to build their lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth with a double to left-center by Tomczak (watch).
Taking a two-hitter into the top of the eighth, the Falcons got to Gonzalez breaking through on the scoreboard with a pair of runs scoring a run on a one-out triple to left-center by third baseman Jacob Booker followed by adding a second run on a RBI groundout by left fielder Ryan Robb that brought home Booker from third.
With the Bulldogs' lead down to four, the 'Dogs scored one final time in the bottom of the frame on a single back up the middle by Ashford that scored Dempsey to give the 'Dogs the final score of the game.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On Gonzalez's performance tonight....
"That is five starts in a row where he has pitched excellent. He has really turned the corner and is a tough guy to handle at this level. He is really pitching at a Double-A level and has exceptional fastball location and two breaking balls that he can throw for a strike whenever he wants to and is also mixing in a third breaking ball occasionally. It was a pretty special performance and he was locked in and he probably could have finished the game, but is he one day short of rest from last Saturday at San Diego State. A special performance."
On seeing the return of Torin Goldstein, Emilio Nogales and McCarthy Tatum to the field tonight, all who have dealt with injuries this season....
"The character and the make-up of the team is great. Those things are priceless and go so far and the guys in the dugout are exceptionally excited to see those guys get into the game and they are limited because of their injuries, but they are giving us everything they can do and that is one thing I really like to know is what they can do not what they can't do."
