'Dogs grab No. 2 seed in Mountain West Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The Fresno State men's tennis team earned the No. 2 seed in the 2018 Mountain West Championships for the second consecutive season. The Bulldogs finished conference play with a 6-1 record, entering the tournament on a three-match winning streak.Â
The Bulldogs posted a conference-high 17 regular-season victories overall and faced off against five ranked foes. Fresno State will open up the MW championship against No. 7 seeded Air Force. The Falcons ended the the season 11-14 overall (1-6 MW) and were swept by Fresno State on March 23, 7-0. This is the second consecutive year that the Bulldogs will open the MW Championships against the Falcons. Zdenek Derkas enters the tournament with 7-0 singles record for the Bulldogs, playing primarily at the No. 3 position. The quarterfinal match between the Bulldogs and Falcons will begin at the Aztec Tennis Center at 3 p.m. PT on Thursday, April 26.Â
Utah State as the 2018 Mountain West regular season champion, earned the No. 1 seed. The Aggies finished Conference play with a perfect 7-0 record and completed the regular season with a 16-8 overall mark. Utah State is set to face the No. 8 seed Boise State in the first quarterfinal match.Â
New Mexico, who secured the No. 3 spot, will face off against tournament host and No. 6 San Diego State in the last contest of the quarterfinals at 6 p.m. PT. No. 4 seeded UNLV will face off against instate rival and No. 5 seeded Nevada in the second quarterfinal match.
The Conference seeds the bracket according to their conference finish, if a tie between two teams exists than it goes to the head-to-head matchup. A tie by three or more teams is broken using the team ITA rankings.
