The Diamond 'Dogs dominated Air Force, 10-0 on Sunday afternoon to win the series over the Falcons. The 'Dogs are back home on Tuesday vs. Pepperdine at 6:05 p.m.
Fresno State (26-17, 11-13 MW) continued to stay hot from the plate collecting 14 hits on the afternoon as eight different Diamond 'Dogs recorded a base knock. Sophomore catcher Carter Bins matched his career-high with three hits finishing with two doubles, a single, four RBIs and a run scored.
Korby Batesole, JT Arruda, Nate Thimjon and Nick Warren all pitched in two hits apiece as Thimjon tallied a double and home run before exiting the game. The 'Dogs six doubles in the contest were the second-most in a game this season trailing only seven at New Mexico on April 6.
On the mound, Arias improves to 5-1 on the season lowering his ERA to a Mountain West-low 1.91 as he matched his season-high of 6.0 innings limiting Air Force (20-23, 11-12 MW) to three hits, two singles, two walks while striking out four. Jamison Hill, Nikoh Mitchell and Davis Moore each tossed a shutout inning in relief.
How It Happened
The Bulldogs jumped all over reigning Mountain West Pitcher of the Week Ryan Holloway for three runs in the bottom of the first scoring a pair on a two-run double to right-center by Bins for his team-leading 17th double of the season (watch). Arruda followed with a single to right-center that scored Bins from second to push the 'Dogs lead to 3-0.
Thimjon lead off the second inning with a home run to left-center, his second of the season, to give the 'Dogs a 4-0 lead (watch).
A two-run double to left-center by Batesole in the bottom of the fourth scored Warren and Zach Ashford (watch) and Bins followed two batters later with a single to right field driving home Batesole from second to make it 7-0.
Getting into his only jam of the afternoon, Arias loaded the bases loaded full of Falcons in the top of the sixth after issuing his only two walks of the game, but he was able to get shortstop Tyler Zabojnik to groundout back to him to preserve the shutout.
The 'Dogs closed out the scoring adding three more runs in the eighth scoring a pair of runs on a Falcon throwing error and tacked on one more on another double by Bins that brought in pinch-runner Auston Chastain from first base (watch).
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On the intensity and focused shown by the Bulldogs today....
"That was a tough game last night, but to win three of four on the week and two out of three on the weekend is good. We would have liked to get all three, but it's onto next week."
On Arias' performance on the mound....
"Today Jaime did exactly what we needed him to do and why we wanted him to start because he is a strike thrower. That is the most pitches he has thrown all season but he kept the ball down and we played some pretty good defense behind him. That is what wins baseball games is pitching and defense and that is what we brought today."
On having over 300 youth baseball players out at today's game...
"I just love having the kids out of here and to get them out here when they are young used to being on this field and some place they dream about that is how this town used to be in the 1970 and 80's and there wasn't anyone who lived in the Valley that did not want to play here and it is great that we played well and some of them will dream tonight about being a Bulldog and I love that!"
On Korby Batesole's play at shortstop...
"Burks is playing well and that works together and I don't know if I ever mentioned that I am his dad, but yesterday the Air Force coach came up to me and what said that what he liked most about Friday's game was despite the big lead for us, Korby ran hard all the way down the first baseline and to me as a dad that was pretty cool for someone to notice and appreciate that."
