The Diamond 'Dogs are back in action on Friday at Nevada at 6:00 p.m.
FRESNO, Calif. - The Diamond 'Dogs dropped a hard-fought battle to Pepperdine, 2-0 on Tuesday night at Bob Bennett Stadium on National Principals' Day.
Unable to get any runs across for only the third time all season, Fresno State (26-18) was held to eight hits in the game as senior shortstop Korby Batesole was the lone 'Dog with multiple hits finishing with two singles.
Junior center fielder Zach Ashford extended his on-base streak to 46 games with an eighth inning double (watch) and now has a current hitting streak of 17 games and has a hit in 39 of the 42 games he has played in this season.
On the mound, freshman southpaw Nikoh Mitchell tossed three shutout innings before giving way to fellow freshman Jamison Hill.
After striking out three Wave batters in the top of the fourth, Pepperdine (22-17) scored their lone two runs of the game off Hill in the fifth on a one-out double down the left field line by shortstop Chase Lambert and added an insurance run on an RBI fielder's choice by first baseman Brandt Belk.
Tiegen Jones and Davis Moore also saw action as Jones threw a scoreless sixth and Moore threw the final three innings for his longest outing since April 15.
The 'Dogs had runners on first and second with no outs in the bottom of the sixth, but a strikeout and double play ended the threat and again had two runners on with one out in the eighth, but were unable to get any runners in.
Quotes
Head Coach Mike Batesole
On tonight's game....
"Every time it seems like we had a runner in scoring position tonight, we ripped a ball and to come up with no runs, but that is going to happen occasionally in baseball. That was a hard college baseball game that you want to win and are kicking yourself going home, but we hit at least 14 balls hard and move onto the next one."
Freshman LHP Nikoh Mitchell
On tonight's game....
"It is part of the game and we just hit some balls right at people, but we played great defense all night and pitched great."
